2013 GOLD IN CLEARWATER
Clearwater, Fla., selected to host GOLD National Championship in 2013
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today that the 2013 ASA Girls’ 18-Under Fast Pitch GOLD National Championship will be held in Clearwater, Fla. The GOLD National Championship, one of the most prominent tournaments in Junior Olympic (JO) play, will take place July 21-27, 2013, at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
“We are thrilled to be the host for this prestigious tournament for the Amateur Softball Association,” said Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard. “This is a great partnership between the ASA, City of Clearwater and the Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission. Anytime we are able to bring large groups of elite caliber athletes and their families to Clearwater for sporting events like this, it is a win-win for the athletes and our region.”
Named after the former Clearwater Bomber player and manager who also worked as Clearwater Parks and Recreation director, the Eddie C. Moore Complex has nine fields located at three locations on Drew Street, all of which are within walking distance and connected by a trail. The complex offers soft toss areas for pre-game warm ups. Fields 8-9 also have state-of-the-art training facilities with covered batting tunnels. Additionally, the complex has concession stands, picnic areas and permanent restrooms.
“Clearwater is a great location for the 2013 ASA Girls’ 18-Under Fast Pitch GOLD National Championship,” said Florida ASA Commissioner Carlton Benton. “Clearwater has a long tradition in ASA Softball and the tournament will be played at the award winning Eddie C Moore Complex, which has been a great facility for ASA Softball. Eddie C. Moore was a long time ASA Commissioner and the entire community is excited to have this championship come to Clearwater.”
The facility hosted the USA Softball Women’s National Team for the “Aiming for Athens” and “Bound for Beijing” pre-Olympic Games tours in 2004 and 2008. Additionally, the Moore Complex hosts three national collegiate tournaments (NFCA Lead-Off Classic, the Under Armour Invitational and The Under Armour Showcase) as well as select University of South Florida sponsored events.
“We are excited to bring one of our most prominent Junior Olympic championships, the ASA Girls’ 18-Under Fast Pitch GOLD National Championship, to Clearwater,” ASA/USA Softball Executive Director Ron Radigonda said. “When our athletes choose to play ASA, they expect to play quality softball in top notch facilities and that is exactly what is being offered by Clearwater for this tournament. We are excited about our partnership with the City of Clearwater, Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, the Eddie C. Moore Complex and Florida ASA and could not be more pleased with the outlook for 2013. It will be another great event for ASA Softball.”
Clearwater is the spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies. Additionally, Clearwater/St. Petersburg has hosted major sporting events such as the NCAA Men’s Final Four, BIG EAST Baseball Championships, the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and the Foster Grant Ironman World Championships 70.3.
“This is fantastic to have an event like this in the St. Pete and Clearwater area,” said Kevin Smith, Director of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission. “Obviously it is a great opportunity and we are proud to be partnering with the City of Clearwater to bring teams to our destination. It is the top of amateur softball in the country and we appreciate all that was done to bring the championship here.”
San Diego hosted in 2011 with Team North Florida (Dunnellon, Fla.) taking the title. Oklahoma City will host the next ASA Girls’ 18-Under Fast Pitch GOLD National Championship, July 22-28, 2012, at the ASA Hall of Fame Complex. The tournament is held in Oklahoma City every other year with locations in the east and west alternating in the off years.
Locations of other 2013 ASA National Championships will be announced by the ASA following the 80th Annual Council Meeting, Nov. 4-12, at the Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Check www.asasoftball.com for information regarding 2012 championships.
