Gascoigne Perfect as OU Routs Appalachian State

Sophomore record seventh perfect game in Oklahoma program history

TEMPE, Ariz. – University of Oklahoma sophomore Michelle Gascoigne threw the seventh perfect game in Oklahoma program history as the Sooners downed Appalachian State 8-0 in five innings Friday afternoon at the Kajikawa Classic. Gascoigne struck out eight and threw just 51 pitches, 41 of those registering as strikes. Jessica Shults led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run and two runs batted in. Chana’e Jones went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one walk. Leadoff batter Brianna Turang went 2-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI. Dani Dobbs drove in two runs on a 1-for-2 showing. The Sooners led 2-0 after the third inning and broke out to score three runs each in the fourth and fifth to force the run-rule. Oklahoma tallied 11 hits in the one hour, 10 minute contest. Melanie Mitchell, 10K, in Virginia’s 4-2 win over SIU Edwardsville but lost second game to Campbell 7-2.  Lizzie Goldbach had 2-run HR for Campbell.

Unranked Kansas upset North Carolina 5-4.  All Jayhawk runs were on homers: Rosie Hull 3-run, Alex Jones 2-run.  Lori Spingola took loss, with 9K, but came back to defeat Bethune-Cookman 5-0.

Alysha Rudnik and Kristine Priebe hit back to back solo HRs in Georgia Tech 3-2 win over FAU.

Cory Mattson threw a no-hitter to lead UNC Greensboro over Florida State 1-0 (9).  Sarah Hamilton notched 15 Ks in a losing cause.  Seminoles got 2-run HR by Robin Ahrburg in loss to St John’s.

Rachel Fico racked 11K in LSU’s 9-1 win over Louisiana Tech.

Christina Hamilton pitched a perfect game in ULL’s 14-0 (5) inning win over Rhode Island.  Taryn Broussard jacked a 3-run home run. Shelbee Rodgers followed with a perfect game for ULL in a 20-0 win over Rhode Island.

All of BYU’s runs in 4-3 loss (8) innings to Portland State were off 2 homers by Jessica Fitu.

Nine of the 17 runs in the CS Northridge vs San Jose State game (9-8 CSUN) were on homers.  Mikayla Thielges grand slam and Jennifer Mosier solo for CSUN; Cheryl Frietas 3-run and Stephanie Ziemann for SJSU. 

Caitlin Grimes had 3-run shot in North Texas 6-0 win over Appalachian State.

Paige Hall pitched perfect game for Oregon State’s 8-0 win over Western Michigan.

Jolene Henderson dominated in Cal’s 14-1 win over CS Bakersfield, pitching the shutout while belting two homers – a grand slam and a 2-run shot.

Teagan Gerhart hurled a 1-hitter, while Jenna Rich hit two 2-run homers and Core Hanewich jacked a 2-run shot, all in Stanford’s 9-0 (5) over CS Northridge.

Christina Trapani jacked a game-ending grand slam to seal Southern Illinois’ 12-8 (8) win over Ohio, which had a 3-run HR by Sara Clark.

Molly Fichtner knocked a grand slam in UTSA’s 11-0 win over Illinois, which had a 3-run shot by Ashley Conrad.

The Washington Huskies jacked 7 home runs in two games.

Eight of UCLA’s runs in support of Donna Kerr’s 19-0 no-hitter over Utah State came on homers.

Carly Hummel pitched a no-hitter with 8K in Memphis 3-0 win over North Florida.  Jessica Phillips drove in 5 runs on 2 homers in loss to DePaul.

Morgan Childers pitched a no-hitter with 14K as USC Upstate def Coastal Carolina 8-0 (6).

Megan Warner hurled a no-hitter with 15K in Illinois State’s win over East Carolina. 

Morgan Druhan tossed a no-hitter in South Alabama’s 15-0 (5) win over Alabama A&M.  USA scored 7 runs on 5 homers.

 The two Stanford victories were #600 and #601 for Cardinal coach John Rittman.

 Freshman Dallas Escobedo may be emerging as the Sun Devils go-to pitcher, notching both of Friday’s wins

Freshman Heidi Shape belted a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, in her collegiate debut, but Mississippi State opened the season with a 5-4 loss to Illinois-Chicago and a 10-9, nine-inning setback to UNLV Friday at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas
