GAME NOTES

Oklahoma 11, Arizona 1 (5).  The #6 Sooners upset the #1 Wildcats, backing Keilani Ricketts 2-hitter with a 10-run barrage.  OU was up 1-0 after two when it scored 5 runs in the 3rd, and five more top of the 5th.  Shelby Babcock took the loss.  Ricketts and Dani Dobbs homered.  Kristen Arriola scored the run for UofA with a solo homer in the 5th.  Jessica Shults scored the first run in the 2nd.  Dobbs led the 3rd with a solo homer.  Turang and Martinez singled; Nix walked; Shults slashed a 3-run double.  Shultsa scored on Rickett’s single.  Shults opened the 5th with a walk; Williams walked; Ricketts Jacked a 3-run homer.  OU scored two final runs on Nix’ two-out single.

Tennessee 11, Michigan State 2.  A Big Orange seven-run first inning set a powerful tone as the No. 4 Tennessee Lady Vol softball team (1-0) resoundingly opened its 2011 campaign by defeating Michigan State (2-1), 11-2 (5 inn.), on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Stetson Leadoff Classic in DeLand, Fla. The big blow of the contest for UT came off the bat of sophomore second baseman Lauren Gibson as the Pasadena, Md., native blasted a three-run homer to left in the first frame.  Junior first baseman Shelby Burchell registered a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the plate with a run scored and an RBI, sophomore left fielder Raven Chavanne was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, sophomore right fielder Kat Dotson (1-for-1, two walks) knocked in a pair of tallies, while junior third baseman Jessica Spigner (1-for-4) and junior catcher Ashley Andrews (1-for-2) each posted an RBI.  In their first collegiate action in the Orange & White, shortstop Madison Shipman delivered a 2-for-3, double, two-run, stolen base effort while designated player Chelsea O’Connor walked and scored twice while singling in her only official at-bat. From the circle for the Lady Vols, sophomore Ivy Renfroe (1-0) permitted two runs on four hits with a walk and four K’s during a complete-game effort.  In the Vols second game, Ellen Renfro threw a 3-hitter to down Stetson.

Mississippi State. Senior Courtney Nesbit had four hits, including a triple and home run, as Mississippi State came up short in both games of a Saturday doubleheader at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs dropped an 18-5 decision to No. 11 Washington in the opener before UC Riverside rallied in the bottom of the seventh to claim a heart-breaking 7-6 victory in game two.

Texas 8, Northern Illinois 4.  The Texas Softball team rallied from a three-run deficit to defeat Northern Illinois in the final game of pool play at the Texas Classic. The win improved the Longhorns to 3-0 on the season and dropped the Huskies to 0-3. Sophomore rightfielder Taylor Hoagland led the offensive charge for the Horns, going 2-for-3 with a three-run homerun and extending her current hitting streak to 14 games. Freshman righthander Rachel Fox (2-0) earned the win for Texas, throwing 7.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned), while surrendering 12 hits and striking out four. Northern Illinois’ Morgan Bittner (0-2) picked up the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on six hits in 5.0 innings of work.

No. 13 Arizona State 4, No. 9 Oklahoma 3  Dallas Escobedo struck out 11 and Annie Lockwood hit a grand slam to propel No. 13 Arizona State past Oklahoma, 4-3, in the nightcap at the Kajikawa Classic. Shults and Williams hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the fourth to give Oklahoma its three runs. Michelle Gascoigne (1-1) picked up the loss for OU, allowing the four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. Gascoigne walked one and fanned six. Ricketts pitched the final 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit, three walks and two strikeouts.

Arizona State. Lights out pitching performances by Dallas Escobedo and Hillary
Bach coupled with a grand slam from Annie Lockwood led the highlights on the day
Saturday as the No. 13 ASU Softball team split Day Three of the Kajikawa Classic
with a 4-3 win over No. 9 Oklahoma and a 3-1 loss (8) to Utah. The Sun Devils
are now 4-1 on the season with Escobedo holding a 4-0 record and Mackenzie
Popescue taking the first loss for ASU in her first collegiate decision.

The nightcap saw veteran Hillary Bach take her first start in 2011 for the Sun
Devils against Utah and pitch a flawless five innings of Bach-tastic softball,
keeping the Utes baffled allowing only three hits while striking out three. The
ASU offense remained lackluster throughout the duration as they left 11 on base
through the game which remained scoreless through seven complete. Mackenzie
Popescue came in to relieve Bach in the sixth inning where she managed to get
through two innings as the game rolled into extra innings.

The Sun Devils were finally able to put a run across in the eighth using the
international tie breaker, but Utah claimed last ups as the home team and made
the most of it. Putting two on with no outs in the bottom of the eighth, first
baseman, Tia Palauni decided to take matters into her own hands as she send an
0-2 pitch into the Phoenix flight path to bring home three and stun the Sun
Devil faithful.

The Sun Devils will wrap the Kajikawa Classic tomorrow with one last game
against San Jose State at 1:30 p.m. in Tempe at Farrington Stadium.

The No. 19 LSU softball team notched a 6-0 victory over Bowling Green coupled with a 5-3 triumph over Purdue to improve to 4-0 on the season Saturday during day two of the Wilson/DeMarini Tiger Classic in-front of 1,189 fans at Tiger Park.  LSU (4-0) has strung together 20 consecutive opening weekend home wins dating back to the 2004 season. Ashley Langoni finished the day with three RBIs on five hits, while Anissa Young belted LSU’s first home run of the 2011 campaign.  Meghan Patterson had 11K against Bowling Green and Rachele Fico had 13K against Purdue.

South Carolina Freshman Julie Sarratt stunned Coastal Carolina in her collegiate debut, tossing the 44th no-hitter in South Carolina history in a 5-0
Gamecock win in the second game on Saturday afternoon at Beckham Field.  Sarratt (1-0) walked one and had just one other base runner in the no-no, striking out five Chanticleers. Sarratt also made an impact at the plate in her first game for the Garnet and Black, singling in her first at bat and later doubling home a run. Junior second baseman Evan Childs helped back the Gaffney, S.C., freshman, hitting a two-run homer. Junior left fielder Kaitlin Westfall went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while junior first baseman Molly Brossart had an RBI. Sophomore shortstop Samie Garcia went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Brossart gave the Gamecocks all the runs they needed in the third, as her sacrifice fly allowed Garcia to score from third. Carolina tacked on four more runs in the fifth, as Childs hit her two-run homer to left center to start the scoring in the frame. Sophomore right fielder Hannah Milks scored from third after a throw got away on the infield. Sarratt capped the scoring with her double down the left-field line, plating Westfall from first.
