Oregon came back from a 5-0 deficit to beat Arkansas (4-4) in eight innings, 8-7, to close second-day action in the Louisville Slugger Classic. In the morning opener vs. No. 9 Hawai’i (7-1), the Ducks also shook a 3-0 deficit early to win 13-5 in five innings. In the afternoon finale, UO’s power hitters again fueled the rally past Arkansas, thanks to a three-run homer by freshman Kailee Cuico in the fifth inning, a solo homer by sophomore Kaylan Howard and two-run shot by junior Christie Nieto in the seventh inning that put UO up, 7-5. However, Arkansas returned the favor with a pair of runs to tie matters in the seventh after it loaded the bases with a walk, error and single. A wild pitch scored the first run, and a single accounted for the second one, but a strike from Cuico in left field to the catcher on the latter play cut down the potential winning run for the inning’s second out. A ground-out to shortstop ended the inning and forced the Ducks’ third extra-inning contest the last five games. In the top of the eighth, UO freshman Courtney Ceo scored the deciding run when she stole third base, then tagged on a sacrifice fly by Samantha Pappas to right field. In the bottom half of the inning, an opening sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third base, but she was stranded after ground-outs to the pitcher and second baseman. Oregon’s other run came via a RBI single by sophomore Allie Burger in the sixth inning, and pulled UO within, 5-4. In the circle for the Ducks, sophomore Jessica Moore (4-1) earned the win after she pitched the final 4.2 innings, struck out four, walked four, gave up two hits, and one of her two runs allowed was earned. For Arkansas, only one hitter had more than one hit, Chloe Oprzedek (2-for-4, 3 RBI), and six others had single hits. Starting Razorback pitcher Kim Jones worked the first six innings, struck out six, walked two, surrendered 11 hits, and five of her six runs allowed were earned. Chelsea Cohen worked the seventh, walked none, struck out none, gave up three hits, and her run allowed was earned. Layne McGuirt (0-1) pitched the final inning, had no strikeouts or walks and didn’t allow a hit. UO also staked a No. 9 Hawai’i (7-1) a 3-0 lead before coming back to win 13-5 in five innings over the returning World Series advancer. Oregon’s offense featured a game-winning grand slam by Nieto, three-run shots by Courtney Ceo and Monique Fuiava, and a two-run dinger from Kelsey Chambers. Junior Mikayla Endicott (1-0) earned the win after she struck out four and walked one in her 3.1 innings in relief.
Texas swept Colorado State. The Longhorns used a complete-game shutout performance by sophomore pitcher Blaire Luna to ease past Colorado State, 8-0, Saturday night in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational semifinals. The victory advanced Texas (9-0) to the tourney championship where they will meet Missouri State on Sunday at Noon Central. Luna (5-0) notched the victory and her fourth complete game of the season, allowing just one hit, walking two and equaling a season-high with 13 strikeouts. Rams starter Desiree Laswell (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on six hits and walking one.Sophomore rightfielder Taylor Hoagland anchored the Texas offense with her two-hit effort that extended her hitting streak to 20 games. Her streak is the second-longest in UT history, only trailing her own 21-game streak from 2010.
Mississippi State . Despite battling an illness on Saturday, Mississippi State freshman Sam Lenahan was feeling great as her pinch-hit, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning rallied Mississippi State to a 10-8 win against Southern Illinois. The win, coupled with a 2-0 win against Butler earlier in the day, put the Bulldogs in Sunday’s Bulldog Round-Robin championship game at the MSU Softball Field. Bulldog sophomore Kylie Vry tossed a four-hit shutout in Saturday’s opener as the Bulldogs (4-4) clinched a championship game berth against SIU at 1 p.m. on Sunday
