GAME NOTES Cathedral City Classic
Nebraska defeated Ohio State 10-0 (5). The Huskers are a year away from Big Ten competition but showed their mettle by bashing the Buckeyes. Hagemann threw three innings of no-hit ball; Edwards yielded 2 hits in two innings. Thomason was 2-3, with a home run and three rbi.
Nebraska defeated Long Island 6-1. Hagemann gave up 2 hits and the LIU run, Edwards 1 hit. The Huskers scored 3 in the 3rd, and 3 in the 4th. Four runs were earned. The Huskers had 11 hits.
Syracuse defeated Nevada 4-3. Syracuse improved to 11-2, and is quite prepared for Big East competition. Kuwik gave up 4 hits in 5 innings; Caira threw three innings of no-hit ball. Watson hit a solo homer.
UCLA 5, Northwestern 4 (8). The Bruins, who trailed early 2-0, won on Tiamalu’s 2-run walkoff home run bottom 8th. The Wildcats had gone ahead 4-3 in the top. The Wildcats smacked Kerr for 8 hirts, Macon who won in relief for 2 hits including the NU go-ahead run in top 8th. Sammy Albanese was tagged with the loss after surrendering Tiamalu’s dinger. Hall and Majam had solo shots.
LSU 7, Cal Poly 4. Teams were tied 3-all after three. Tigers had gone ahead in top 3rd on Wray’s 2-run homer, 3-1, but the Mustangs tied. The score was knotted until bottom 6thWestlund hit a one-out single off the second LSU hurler, Patterson. Rachele Fico relieved and struck out two batters, but the umpire called consecutive illegal pitches on Fico, and Westlund, who had stolen 2nd on a close call, scored, 4-3. The calls seemed to ignite the Tigers in the 7th. Blades was hbp. Heyward sacrificed her to 2nd. Shaw beat out an infield hit (error by catcher?). Russell was safe on a fielder’s choice, bases loaded. Wray singled, rbi, tying the game. Langoni struck out on a rise ball. Santos drew a bases loaded walk, rbi, 5-4. Houston doubled in two runs. In the bottom, Fico struck out two of three, and emerged as the winning pitcher.
UCLA 12, Ohio State 5. The Bruins scored 4 runs bottom 1st on 2 hits, 4 walks, and 6 illegal pitches called on a trio of Buckeye hurlers. The only solid blow was DiSalvatore’s ground rule double, rbi. Three runs were forced in by illegal pitch calls. UCLA leading 8-5 loaded the bases in the 4th. Bates belted a 2-run double. The Bruins loaded the bases again in the 6th, and scored two more runs, one when DiSalvatore drew a bases-loaded walk. UCLA finished with three wins, two losses. Bates, DiSalvatore, and Taumalu eachmhad 2 rbi; Harrison, Fox and Snow had the other rbi. The Bruins had 15 hits, with six players having multiple hits. But, the Bruins stranded 11 runners, the Buckeyes 9.
Arizona 6, Loyola Marymount 0. Kenzi Foster was ailing so Shelby Babcock did yeoman service. Babcock worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the 4th. The game was effectively decided in bottom 3rd. Lastrapes singled, Schutzler walked, DelPionte walked, loading the bases for Stacey Chambers who jacked a grand slam, the third slam and eighth home run of the season. Chambers now has 74 round-trippers, closing in on the NCAA record of 90 set by Stacey Nuveman as a catcher for UCLA more than a decade ago. In the 4th, Lastrapes made out but was given another at-bat when one of the multitude of illegal pitches called in this tournament reversed the out; Lastrapes singled, and later scored on a pickle. Lastrapes also scored the final run in the 6th; she singled and scored on Del Ponte’s single.
Arizona 5, Loyola Marymount 0. A subpar Kenzie Fowler is still superior to most other pitchers, as she proved against the Aztecs, limiting them to four hits. This game was virtually over in the 1st. Lastrapes walked; Schutzler beat out an infield hit; after Del Ponte ground out, Chambers cracked a 2-run double. Koria singled, and Arriola drove in a third run. In the 6th, freshman shortstop Lavine belted a 2-run home run.
Texas 3, Massachusetts 0. Blaire Luna paired 10Ks with one hit by Magill. In the 5th, Bennett drove in a run, and Bruins drove in two more.
Fresno State 7, U Mass 5. The Bulldogs expanded their 2-1 lead with Stiglich’s grand slam in the 5th. Magill hit a 2-run shot for U Mass and Meeks also hit a 2-run homer; Meeks was 3-3. Plourde had 11 Ks in a losing cause.
Utah 10, Nevada 0. Myers slugged a grand slam for Utah and Fankhauser had a 3-run shot in their 8-run outburst in the 3rd. Brewer took the loss, charged with the first two Utah runs in the 2nd, but Craig was tagged for 7 hits and the 8 runs in the 3rd.
Syracuse 2, CS Fullerton 1. The game was scoreless until the 6th when Mario scored for the Titans. In the bottom, Kohl and Nandin drove in runs, Kohl driving in L. Daniels who had tripled.
NOTES FROM OTHER GAMES
North Carolina 3, Penn State 0. Tar Heel freshman Lori Spingola pitched a perfect game.
Oregon tapped a sixth-inning solo home run by Kelsey Chambers to win its second game Sunday in day two of the Libby Matson Tournament. Chambers claimed her first game-winning RBI of 2011 immediately before with a sacrifice fly in the Ducks’ 6-0 win over San Jose State – its second straight tourney win over the Spartans. Junior Samantha Skillingstad also did her part in the day’s second game and her second shutout of the season. The Spokane, Wash., native struck out 11 Broncos – one off her career high – walked four, and allowed only three hits.
Notre Dame sets record. Ten years ago, the Notre Dame softball team started the 2001 campaign with eight straight wins. One decade the later, the Irish bettered that school-record streak with nine straight wins after earning a pair of wins Sunday at the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic. Notre Dame began the day at Patriots Point with a five-inning, 10-1 victory over Marist. The team then went to work for a 6-4 win over Liberty for the program’s 900th win in 23 seasons.
A perfect 4-0 record at the Cougar Classic was made largely possible by a pitching corps which posted a 0.54 ERA in 26.0 innings. Jody Valdivia, Laura Winter, Jackie Bowe and Brittany O’Donnell each recorded a win with Valdivia also posting a save.
