THE LAST TIME I SAW CAIRO
Reflections on visits to the Egyptian capitol over 20 years – including two incidents which had life-threatening potential. Because there is no softball connection, the story and photos are published on www.spysoftball.org.
ESF CONGRESS HELD IN BELGIUM
This past weekend the European Softball Federation held their annual Congress, with the 2011 edition taking place in Antwerp, Belgium. There were 21 countries represented and International Softball Federation President Don Porter was on-hand as well. This was the 36th ESF Congress and the delegates voted for the location of next year’s, which will be in Malta, winning over the Netherlands for the right to host the meetings.
After the retirement of Mr. Patrice Bienfait (FRA) from the position of secretary general during last year’s Congress, the delegates this past weekend voted unanimously for Ms. Francesca Fabretto (ITA) as the new holder of that ESF position. The Congress also allotted various 2011 events to different organizers. This year will see four European championships and seven Cups in different categories (male/female/coed – fast pitch/slow pitch – youth/senior). The calendar of all ESF official events can be found online at www.europeansoftball.org.
ISF Director of Umpires Bob Stanton will be heading to Australia for a February 12-19 ISF umpire certification seminar. Happening just six weeks after a similar session had taken place at the ISF world headquarters complex in Plant City, Florida, this will be just the latest opportunity for men and women who are seeking the proper certification to officiate in ISF or ISF-sanctioned tournaments to achieve that level of umpiring by way of classroom and on-field testing. The aforementioned seminar in the United States resulted in 26 umpires gaining their ISF certification. The upcoming edition will take place at the Redlands Softball Association in Queensland.
All umpires, whether ISF-certified or not, are reminded of the ISF’s online resource, UmpSchool, where practice tests, rules, the case book, the umpire manual, and other reference content is available for a nominal registration fee. Visit www.ruleboxsoftware.com/isf.aspx to get started. (ISF UmpSchool is presented in both English and Spanish.)
ISF PRESIDENT EYES SEA GAMES
Following the report in last week’s (February 2) UPDATE about softball’s efforts towards the 2014 Asian Games, ISF President Don Porter said today, upon receiving official notification from the Indonesian NOC about softball’s inclusion, that he places great importance on the Southeast Asian Games too. “I am pleased that our sport will have another opportunity to be part of a major multi-sport Games in Asia this year, and especially that it’s for both men and women.” From November 11-25 the 26th South East Asian Games will take place in Palembang, Indonesia. Mr. Porter pointed out that Indonesia competed in the ISF XII Men’s World Championship in 2009 and the 9th Asian Women’s Softball Championship took place in Indonesia in 2007. “And overall,” Mr. Porter added, “softball is in more than a dozen multi-sport Games, which means that our athletes are getting that many more international competition opportunities.”
