Georgia Fends Off Florida; Holds On To Top Spot In Latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll

STARKVILLE, Miss. – After a 4-1 showing the Cathedral City Classic last week, including an 8-0 win over previous No. 3 Arizona, Georgia (14-1) is the No. 1 team in the nation for the second week in a row, according to the latest USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 poll that was released by the Association on Tuesday.
The Bulldogs staved off a tough challenge from undefeated Florida for the top spot, with Georgia garnering 18 of the 30 first-place votes, while the Gators notched 10. No. 2 Florida went 5-0 in the Cathedral City tournament, with their biggest win coming against last week’s No. 2 UCLA.
Rounding out this week’s top five were undefeated Alabama (16-0) in third, Arizona (14-2) in fourth and another unbeaten, Washington (13-0), in fifth.
No. 22 Georgia Tech and No. 25 BYU each left the rankings this week, making way for Fresno St. (6-1) at 23rd and Auburn (15-0) in 24th.
The USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll is voted on by NCAA Division I head coaches, one representing each conference. Records as of Feb. 27, 2011 are shown, first-place votes are in parentheses.
