South Florida’s Sara Nevins tabbed as USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week
OKLAHOMA CITY — Sara Nevins is the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for March 5-11, the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today. The South Florida sophomore southpaw followed her Saturday no-hitter against Central Connecticut, the first no-hitter for the Bulls since 2004, with a perfect game Sunday against Toledo to earn her first USA Softball Player of the Week award.
“Sara’s recognition this week is well deserved,” said Head Coach Ken Eriksen. “Her maturity in the circle this year as she learns to pitch instead of just throw continues to impress me. It’s been fun to watch her go through the process of her development.”
Nevins (Pinellas Park, Fla.) appeared in all six games played by No. 23 South Florida (19-4) last week, going 3-0 with two saves. In her 27.1 innings of work, she allowed no runs, just seven hits and two walks while striking out 37 batters. She finished the week with a 0.00 ERA and her opponents were held to a .078 batting average.
“Like Coach Eriksen tells us, the first inning is always the most important, because it sets a tone, so we’ve really focused on setting that tone the way we want to,” Nevins said. “We’ve been focusing on attacking the hitter and getting first-pitch strikes, and it’s been working well this year.”
Nevins is now 9-2 overall with three saves over 19 appearances with four solo shutouts and a 0.78 ERA. She also has a team-leading 94 strikeouts, allowing just 13 walks. Her opponents have a batting average of .179.
She was also named the Player of the Week by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), becoming the first player this season to sweep the national awards. She is also the BIG EAST Player of the Week.
