Georgia 10, Florida 7. SEC slugfest. Bulldogs held 1-0 lead, expanded in 5th to 6-0. But, Gators scored six in bottom half to tie, and a run in 6th to lead 7-6. Georgia racked 4 runs top 7th for 10-7 lead. Gators put one on in 7th when Bruder was hbp with one out; Schutte walked; but Bush hit into double play. Bulldogs had 12 hits, Gators 10. Top 1st: Wiggins walked; Goler and Hesson singled, rbi. Top 5th: despite losing 2 runners at home on fielders’ choices, Georgia scored 5 runs on 4 hits, including Schlopy 2-run double. Bottom: Bush, Coyle opened with consecutive homers, Arevalo relieved Owen. Moultrie reached on fielder’s choice, Langley scored. Owen came back to the circle, and gave up a 3-run homer to Bruder. Bottom 6th: Florida took 7-6 lead on solo shot by Bush; Montemayor relieved Owen. Top 7th: Schlopy hit a one-out solo shot. With two out, Hesson jacked 3-run homer. As noted above, game ended on double play. Georgia 25-4/6-3. Florida 30-2/7-1.
Stanford 9, Sacramento State 1 (5). Bottom 1st: Ashley Hansen, who leads Div 1 in batting, doubled; scored onsingle by Rich whp scored on Burns’ single. Cardinal added 5 runs in 3rd, three on double by Rich. Smith homered to lead Sac State 5th; Stanford responded in bottom with 2 runs to achieve run-rule; rbi single by Hassman, sac fly by Rich (5 rbi). Stanford 21-3; Sac State 7-13.
Tennessee 4, South Carolina 2 (8). After Renfroe struck out 2 of 3 top 8th, Andrews 1-out single; advanced on wild pitch; pinch hitter O’Connor belted 2-run homer. Renfroe limited the Gamecocks to 3 hits; the Vols had 7. Tennessee scored bottom 2nd on back-to-back homers by Spigner and Shipman off USC starter Aubre Broyles. Top 4th, Hathom singled, Mendes slugged 2-run homer. UT 25-5/3-3. USC 17-13/3-8.
Fresno State 2, Louisiana Tech 0. Moses doubled and scored in 4th; Fresno added the insurance run in the 5th; Hall scored when Moore was hbp, bases loaded. Note that with conference shifts, this game marks Fresno State’s final visit to Rushton LA.
Alabama 10, Arkansas 1 (5). A 3-1 Bama lead turned into a 10-1 lead after the Tide scored 7 bottom 4th. Locke homered leading off Bama 2nd. Braud doubled to lead Bama 3rd; Fenton homered. Cohen relievced McLemore. Martindale scored for Lady Backs top 4th on Gee sac fly. Bottom: Tide loaded bases; Fenton jacked a two-out grand slam. After Larsen singled, McGuirt relieved Cohen. Traina rbi double. Conley doubled in 2 runs. #1 ranked Bama 31-2/7-1. Arkansas 10-22/1-10.
Oregon 11, UNLV 3 (5). First game of double-header. Ducks went yard, top 1st. After Fulava’s rbi single, Cuico belted grand slam. Holland led bottom 1st with homer for UNLV. Burger scored top 4th on Fulava’s second rbi single; UNLV answered in bottom when Van Acker scored on Monreal rbi. Pappas led giant stride toward run-rule in 5th with grand slam. Valentino stroked solo shot for UNLV. Oregon 25-4. UNLV 15-11.
Stanford 10, Coastal Carolina 2 (6). Cardinal racked 14 hits including 2 dingers. Started with consecutive singles in 1st by Hassman, Hansen and Rich. Miller rbi groundout; Prong rbi single; Van Zandt rbi groundout. Snelling and Pisone singled and scored for Coastal in 4th. In bottom, Pura singled; Hanewich homer. Hassman, Hansen singled, both advanced on wild pitch; Hassman scored. Burns doubled, Pura homered in 5th. Van Zandt singled, Koutz and Hansen scored final runs. Stanford 22-3. Coastal 14-14.
Kentucky 12, Mississippi State 6. UK set school record with 4 homers. Bulldogs took 2-0 lead top 1st on Smith rbi double, Lanahan rbi. UK tied bottom 2nd. Cervantes led with solo HR; DeMartine singled advanced on illegal pitch; scored on O’Brien sac fly. MSU reclaimed lead top 3rd on Lenahan 2-run homer. But Kentucky came back with 4 runs in bottom. Yocke homered to lead off; Flesher relieved Kylie Vry. With two out, Cumbess jacked 3-run homer. Smith and Offut scored on Raines rbi double in the Bulldog 5th. Bottom 5th: Cervantes walked; Riley homered. Becker relieved Flesher. Rowlands rbi; Yocke 2-run single; Yocke scored the sixth run of the at-bat. Kentucky 19-7/5-3. MSU 15-15/5-3.
Arizona 8, CS Northridge 0 (5). Fowler threw a no-hitter for the four innings she pitched; striking out 5 of the 14 batters she faced, while giving up 2 walks. Shelby Babcock pitched the 5th, no hits. The Wildcats banged 11 hits, starting with 3 hits bottom 1st, including Del Ponte rbi double. Koch rbi single. In 2nd, Kirker singled; with 2 out, Schutzler singled, Del Ponte doubled, rbi; Chambers racked a 3-run homer. Arriola homered to open the Wildcat 3rd. With bases loaded in 4th, Buchanan lined into double play but Kirker singled inthe eighth run.
Arizona State 8, UC-Santa Barbara 0 (5). Sun Devils put this game away with 6 runs bottom 2nd. After Escobedo struck out the side in the top, Lockwood and Urfer walked; Goodman sacrificed; Haro rbi single; Boyd rbi single; Rogers rbi single; Parlich rbi single; Lockwood rbi single. Lockwood sealed the run-rule with a 2-run homer in the 4th.
Notre Dame 4, Northern Illinois 1. Northern Illinois posted its lone run on three hits in the first inning of Friday’s non-conference softball matchup with Notre Dame. However, Notre Dame scored four straight – including a pair in the fifth inning – en route to a 4-1 win. Jody Valdivia was tagged for four hits in her starting role, three of which came in the opening frame. The Huskies (10-12) left two on base and tacked on another hit in the second. Brittany O’Donnell (3-0) stepped in to start the third inning, fanning four of the eight batters she faced in 2.0 innings. O’Donnell worked well enough to earn the win and was aided by a pair of runs from the Irish offense.
