GAME NOTES
Gametracker, UCS, NFCA, college web sites
Georgia Tech 5, North Carolina State 4. Wolfpack was leading 4-2 into bottom 7th when Yellow Jackets scored three runs: Kuzma singled; Bear hbp; Weseman 2-run triple to tie; Priebe hit into fielder’s choice, Weseman scored winner. Georgia Tech 26-5. NC State 15-13. NC State’s Warren scored top 1st on Desbois double. Tech scored 2 in 2nd after State left bases loaded in top; State recaptured lead in 4th on rbi’s by Ishibashi and Warren, 3-2. Wolfpack loaded bases in 5th; Wells scored when Ishibashi hbp; 4-2.
Maryland 13, Virginia 0 (5). 1-hitter one of Hickey’s best. Carroll had 5 rbi with a 2-run homer; Maier had 3 rbi with a solo homer.
Kentucky 8, Mississippi State 0. In fashioning her no-hitter, Bell struck out 11 of the 16 batters she faced. No pressure; after Bell struck out the side to start the game, KU scored 6 runs bottom 1st. Cumbess doubled for 2, Jolly rbi double; Allen rbi single. KU scored 2 unearned runs in 4th. Kentucky improves to 20-7/6-3. Bulldogs are 15-15/3-0
Alabama 12, Arkansas 3. A contest for 2 innings. Lady Backs loaded bases, top 1st, one out, but Dunne fanned last 2 batters. hen loaded bases in bottom; Locke singled in 2 runs. Boccia slugged a 3-run homer. 5-0. Arkansas responded with 3 runs, top 2nd on Cardens’ 3-run shot. 5-3. But, that was the last Arkansas score. In the bottom, with two out, the Tide again loaded the bases. Braud scored on an illegal pitch. Hunt singled in 2 runs. 8-3. Bottom 4th: Larsen led with a solo. One out, Locke homered. After another pitching change, Dawson doubled, rbi, Iamuri singled, rbi. Bama 32-2/8-1. Arkansas 10-23/1-11.
Nebraska 4, Oklahoma 1. The Sooners, already out of the top ten in some polls, could lose their #7 ESPN ranking after this week, losing to Tulsa and now to the Huskers in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Ironically, this 2011 edition is one of Rhonda Revelle’s best in years — just as Nebraska is leaving the Big 12. Ricketts fanned 13, and the Huskers had 7 hits, but one of those in the 3rd was a home run by Tay Edwards. Thomason walked; with 2 out, Foland doubled, rbi, and went to 3rd on a wild pitch. She scored on Tat Edwards single. Norris led the OU 3rd with a solo shot, okne of five Sooner hits. Ricketts struck out the side in the 4th. Tay Edwards walked to lead the NU 5th; advanced on a passed ball; Thomason singled; Brechtel reached on a fielder’s choice, Edwards scored, the runners advanced on the error at 3rd, one of three for the Sooners. Nebraska improves to 27-3/1-0. Oklahoma is 26-9/0-1.
Baylor 2, Texas A&M 1. Bottom 1st: Walker one-out single; Turk sacrificed; Leal walked; Walker advanced to 3rd on wild pitch and stole home. Texas A&M 3rd: Walker singled, scored on throwing error. After Dumezich relieved Allen bottom 11th; Turk jacked walkoff home run.
Big 12 pitching: Conference openers featured stellar pitching: Luna 16-2; Martinez 12-2; Hagemann 19-2; Ricketts 14-5; Ezpinosa 14-3; Canion 14-3; Dumezich 14-5; Thomas 11-2; Dennis 10-1.
Georgia 13, Florida 5. Ensley Gammel was racked for 7 hits, 1- earned runs, 10 walks, and 3 homers. Kasey Fagan gave up 2 hits, 3 runs. The question is not why Gammel — usuallyseen in right field or as DH, and only occasionally as a pitcher — was pitching in a battle between two teams, which have both been ranked #1. The question is why Stephanie Brombacher and Hannah Rogers were not pitching this crucial SEC series. The answer has been reported in Florida newspapers. According to the newspapers, Brombacher is nursing a sore arm. Rogers, the papers reported, is on a 2-game suspension — which results from an incident in the game against Ole Miss. Their pitcher Brittany Barnhill hit Gammel, who at the time was playing right field. When Barnhill next came to bat, she was plunked — deliberately the papers said — by Rogers, who was removed from the game. According to Florida sources, Gator coach Tim Walton imposed the suspension, not the umpires. The final score notwithstanding, today’s game was close until the 7th. Georgia led 6-5 at that point. Top 7th: with bases loaded, Gammel relieved Fagan who had worked 2 innings. Hubbard and Auger drew bases-loaded walks; Schlopy sac fly, rbi; Pauly singled, rbi; Goler slugged a 3-run homer. Earlier, Hesson and Razey had hit homers off Gammel. Georgia 26-4/7-3. Florida 30-2/7-2.
Michigan 2, Northwestern 1. The Wildcats scored bottom 3rd – Allard singled, scored on Thompson single — and the Wolverines tied in the 5th. Blanchard doubled; pinch runner Hasselbach scored on Powers single. Top 7th: on out, Knapp homered. UM 30-2/1-0. NU 14-8/0-1.
Texas 12, Kansas 0. Luna pitched 3 innings of no-hit ball; the Jayhawks took 2 hits off Rachel Fox. The Horns scored 3 bottom 1st, 2 on a homer by Bennett, one on a solo shot by Taylor. Texas doubled that run output with 6 in the 2nd. Thom rbi double; she scored on an illegal pitch. Hooks drew an rbi bases-loaded walk; Taylor and Schmidt rbi’s. With 2 out in the 3rd, Hoagland and Washington singled; Bennett singled rbi; Hooks doubled in the final 2 runs. Texas 27-3/1-0. Kansas 26-6/0-3.
Tennessee 10, South Carolina 3. The Vols came out runnin’ – scoring 6 bottom 1st. loaded, one out; Gibson singled, rbi; Burchell singled, 2 rbi; O’Connor singled, rbi; Spigner walked; Borchardt relieved Sarratt. Chavanne singled, 2 rbi. Grieve scored in 4th on Gibson rbi single. Gamecocks scored 3 top 6th. Vols cane back with three in bottom. Gibson, Burchardt singled; O’Connor grounded into double play; Gibson scored on wild pitch. Shipman doubled, Andrews rbi single. Chavanne singled, rbi. Tennessee 26-5/4-3. South Carolina 17-14/3-9.
Oregon Wins 4 at Mustang Classic. For the four-game tourney, Fuiava paced the Duck starters in batting (.583), hits (7), slugging (.667), walks (2) and stolen bases (1). Ten other Duck hitters topped .300 – Alexa Peterson (.500, 2H), Lindsey Chambers (.500, 2 2B), Allie Burger 9.444, 4 H), Christie Nieto (.429, 3 H, 1 2B), Samantha Pappas (.385, 5 H, 1 HR, 6 RBI), Courtney Ceo (.385, 5 H, 1 2B), Kailee Cuico (.375, 1 2B, 1 HR, 5 RB), Kaitlin Vitek (.333, 1 HR, 4 RBI), Ashley Kivett (.333) and Brittany Rumfelt (.333). On the mound the four games, Rumfelt and Endicott both logged perfect 0.00 ERA’s and pitched 5.1 and 2.0 innings, respectively. Skillingstad struck out 11 in her 8.0 innings and posted a 1.75 ERA.
Missouri 4, Texas Tech 1. Redshirt sophomore Chelsea Thomas won her 11th consecutive decision to improve to 11-2 on the year. The righty struck out seven while walking zero. She allowed one run and scattered just three hits. Missouri struck in the first, getting a run with two outs in the top of the inning. Senior Rhea Taylor led off the game with an infield single, legging out a dribbler to the left of the circle. She’d move over to third base following a pair of groundouts, and touched home when freshman Maddison Ruggeberg hit a liner into right field for a base hit. The Tigers tacked on another in the top half of the second following three straight singles to start the inning. Lindsey Muller blooped a base hit over the shortstop’s head to lead things off, with Princess Krebs following by getting a base hit into center. Megan Christopher then pulled one into the hole at short, just out of the reach of the fielder, allowing a run to score. Texas Tech’s Megan Dennis got two straight strikeouts and a pop out to get out of the jam without any more damage. Texas Tech cut the Tiger lead in half when Raven Richardson hit a solo home run into right field to lead off the bottom of the third. Thomas had set down all six she faced in order before Richardson sent the 1-0 pitch out of the park. A double by senior Abby Vock put Mizzou back up by two in the top of the fourth, as she connected on a 1-0 pitch, sending a fly ball over the left fielder’s head and off the wall. Krebs scored on the play after singling to lead off the inning, putting the Tigers up 3-1. The teams traded scoreless fifth and sixth innings before Ruggeberg tacked on an insurance run with a two out solo home run in the top of the seventh. Ruggeberg connected on a full count pitch for her fourth home run of the year, tying her for third most on the team. Thomas shut the door on the Red Raiders, getting a 6-4-3 double play after a leadoff single and a strikeout looking to end the game. Ruggeberg led all Tiger hitters with a 3-for-4 day, driving home two and scoring once. Krebs and Vock each added two hits, with Vock driving home a run.
