UCLA 12, UC-Santa Barbara 2. The Bruins emerged from a long layoff (scholastic and weather) swinging their bats with a vengeance: 4 home runs off UCSB. UCLA loaded the bases bottom 1st; lost a runner at home, just before Yocke jacked a grand slam. The next batter, Yudin, homered to center. After snuffing UCSB with a double play top 2nd, UCLA scored again on Bates sac fly. The Bruins 10 hits included back-to-back homers in the 3rd by Tiumalu and Hall. Bottom 4th: Schroeder singled, Bates homered. Fox rbi single and Snow 2-run single closed out Bruin scoring. UCSB scored a run in the 4th and 5th.
Oklahoma 8, Central Arkansas 3. Central Arkansas scored 3 runs off Michelle Gascoigne until she was relieved by Ricketts into the 4th. CAU scored 2, top 1st, Mela Bryant double and an error, and led until the Sooners scored 3 bottom 3rd. With 2 out, Jones scored on Martinez single; Nix doubled in 2 runs. But, CAU tied top 4th; after losing a run at the plate, Tovar scored with 2 out on Gauntt single. OU broke the tie immediately; Williams doubled, Norris belted a 2-run homer. Vandever slugged a 3-run homer in the 6th.
UCLA 10, UCSB 4. UCSB came out firing, and scored 3 runs top 1st off Rodino: rbi’s Jennings, Gill and Boser. In the bottom, Schroeder led with a single; DiSalvatore hit a 2-run homer. The Bruins tied in the 3rd; DiSalvatore and Harrison walked; Fox rbi double. UCLA scored 5 in the 4th, with two out. Bates doubled in 2 runs; Harrison jacked a 3-run homer. Top 5th: Kerr relieved Rodino. Bottom: Crawford smacked a 2-run homer. UCSB scored top 6th on Beristianos home run. UCLA 23-5. UCSB 12-16.
Western Michigan 3, Notre Dame 2. WMU scored 2 runs on Tara Buchanan’s 1st inning homer, and tacked on another run in the 2nd on Jager’s double, to defeat Notre Dame at Melissa Cook Stadium — breaking the nation’s fifth longest home winning streak at 21 games. The win, the first over Notre Dame by the Broncos since 2004, was the first WMU win at Cook stadium since 1999. The last Irish loss at home was to Louisville 6-5, in May 2009. The Irish scored on Johnson’s 2-run homer. Kayla Houston was the winning pitcher; Jody Valdivia took the loss. Notre Dame 17-7. WMU 5-18.
