Tennessee’s Kat Dotson named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today the selection of Lady Volunteer freshman Kat Dotson (Savannah, Ga.) as the Collegiate Player of the Week for the week of March 22-28.

“I am very honored to receive the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week award and proud to represent Tennessee,” Dotson said.  “I have worked really hard on my game and am glad to see my hard work paying off this season.  I couldn’t achieve anything without my teammates.  They are there to help me each day and always willing to help me get better.”

Dotson led the way offensively for the Lady Vols last week by hitting an amazing .769 (10-of-13) overall with a team-best six RBI.  The Savannah, Ga., native posted a streak of seven consecutive hits, good for a tie for the 14th longest streak in NCAA Division I history, and reached safely by hit or walk in nine consecutive plate appearances (eight hits, one walk) from the 10th inning of the doubleheader opener against Kentucky through the first frame of the doubleheader finale versus Ole Miss.

She came up huge for UT during its marathon, 4-3 (10 inn.), victory over the Wildcats, knocking in the tying run during the sixth inning and later delivering a clutch, walk-off single to right center to secure the comeback, extra-inning triumph.  Dotson recorded a career-high four hits in four at-bats with a double and three RBI in the 7-1 win over UK and made it two perfect efforts at the plate for the week with a 2-for-2 performance during the 4-2 victory versus the Rebels.

“This is a tremendous honor for both the Tennessee softball program and Kat Dotson,” Lady Vol co-head coach Karen Weekly said.  “She is a wonderful person, student and softball player and epitomizes the term student-athlete.  We are so very proud of her for what she has accomplished.”

Tennessee advanced from No. 21 to No. 19 in this week’s ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll.
