Mississippi State 5, MVSU 1. Senior Jessica Cooley tripled as part of a two-hit afternoon, and Stephanie Becker tossed 3.1 innings of perfect relief as Mississippi State defeated Mississippi Valley State 5-1 Tuesday afternoon in Itta Bena, Miss. Cooley drove in the tying run in the top of the fourth before coming home with the winning run later that inning. She also singled in the top of the seventh as Mississippi State improved to 21-21 on the season. Senior Courtney Nesbit and junior Ka’ili Smith also collected two hits apiece. Smith also added an RBI for the Dawgs. Becker retired the final 10 MVSU batters to earn the win and run her record to 6-3. The Aurora, Ill., native relieved starter Misty Flesher, who was touched for a run and three hits through the opening 3.2 innings.
Stanford 3, San Jose State 1. A lot of zeroes went on the board before the Cardinal scored their 3 runs bottom 5th. After SJSU’s threat in the top was snuffed by a double play, Gerhart and Koutz singled. Hassman singled, loading the bases. Hanewich cleared the bases with a double to left. SJSU started a rally top 7th. Coenen led with a single; advanced on a wild pitch; Lopez singled; two on , no outs, but Schatz grounded out and Stange popped to short. Wolfe singled, rbi. SJSU stranded two.
Notre Dame sweeps Bowling Green. Notre Dame swept Bowling Green Tuesday at Melissa Cook Stadium to improve its winning streak to 11 games. Notre Dame bumped its overall record to 28-7 with a 10-2 six-inning victory to begin the doubleheader and closed the door with an 8-5 non-conference win.The Irish, who have won 28 of their last 29 home games, now look forward to a contest against Loyola-Chicago on Wednesday (April 13). Heather Johnson extended her hitting streak to 17 games and has now recorded at least one RBI in each of the last 13 affairs. In Game 1, Bowling Green narrowed the lead to 5-2 on a homer by Berger in the 6th, but the Irish scored 5 in the bottom, including a solo shot by Fleury, a 2-run triple by Pitzenberger. Jorgensborg slugged a 2-run homer in the 2nd. In Game 2, the Irish led 6-0 after two; Bowling Green rallied for 4 runs top 7th. Marrone had a 2-run double in the 1st, Jophnson a 2-run single in the 2nd; Clay a 2-run homer in the 6th.
Michigan 6, Western Michigan 1. Wolverines loaded bases, bottom 1st; Chidester rbi single. UM 2nd: Ryan scored on Doyle single, Knapp scored on Sappingfield single. Singles in top 4th by Whitney, Jager and Rousseau (rbi) produced the WMU run. Michigan scored 3 in bottom 4th to end scoring. Doyle and Evans singled, Sappingfield rbi single. Sappingfield and Lane had 3 hits each.
Alabama 5, Troy 2. Deposed from its #1 perch after a trio of losses to LSU, The Tide rolled back with a 12-hit attack against Troy. Top 1st; Braud scored on Larsen sac fly; Traina singled; Boccia homered. Troy narrowed to 3-2 in bottom; with two out, Hollett and Gann hit back-to-back doubles, Harris rbi single. Fenton scored on a throwing error in Bama’s 3rd, and Hunt scored the final run on Lunceford’s single in the 6th. Braud, Traina, Fenton, Locke and Boccia had multiple hits.
Baylor 6, Houston 4 (8). Meagan Weldon hit a tie-breaking 2-run shot in the 8th. Brazil singled, scored for Houston bottom 2nd. Baylor took lead with 3 runs in top 3rd. Houst4on went up 4-3 in 6th. Gaber led off with a home run. With 2 out, Jones singled, Sherman tripled. Anderson rbi single. Weldon and Shelton walked to open Baylor 7th; with 2 out, Weldon scored tying run on passed ball.
Houston 8, Baylor 0 (5). Two big 4-run innings settled this contest. Bottom 2nd: Klinkert singled, advanced on wild pitch; Gaber singled, Spittler in to run; Spittler caught in rundown 2-5-6-8; Klinkert scored on illegal pitch. Two out, Outon doubled, Jones struck out but reached on passed ball; Sherman singled, rbi, Anderson doubled, 2 rbi. Bottom 5th: After Baylor stranded two, Houston racked four. One out, Klinkert and Gaber walked; Brazil homered, 3 rbi. Outon homered to reach run-rule.
