The ESPN ladies covering Arizona vs UCLA talked about that long-time, top drawer rivalray, then mentioned Alabama-Auburn (repeatedly) as another great rivalry; football maybe, but Bama is a recent factor in Top 25, Auburn not a factor); a storied competition between two schools who perennially contend in conference and WCWS is Sooners-Longhorns. Star studded pitching matchup: Ricketts is 20-1, with 207 Ks. Luna is 21-1, with 263 Ks. Two of the first three Sooner batters struck out. Hoagland opened the Texas half with a single. Ricketts caught the next two looking, hit a batter, a groundout ended the first inning. Top 2nd: Ricketts walked, stole 2nd; after two more Ks for Luna, Martinez singled, Parsons walked, loading the bases. Turang singled, rbi. Chamberlain, the prolific home run hitter, struck out, Luna’s fifth in two innings. Horns 2nd, one K, Scott homered. Shireman fanned but reached 1st on a wild pitch. Ceo whiffed; Hoagland, a .459 hitter with 11 HR, walked; Washington fanned, six for Ricketts. #2 Tennessee def Ole Miss 12-4 (5)
WP Ivy Renfroe LP Carly Hummel. Renfroe was tagged for 2 homers, more than offset by Gibson and Chavanne combining for 11 rbi. And, for four innings, Ole Miss made a game of it, leading 4-3 — before the Vols scored 9 runs in the 5th. Gibson belted a 2-run homer, top 1st, which the Rebels answered with three in the bottom. Brown and Ladner singled with 2 out; Osias racked a 3-run homer. The Vols tied top 3rd on Gibson’s rbi double, but Ole Miss scored bottom 4th on Osias’s second homer. Chavanne led the Vols 5th with a double; two outs later, Shipman walked, Tarango was hbp, Davin cleared the bases with a 3-run double; Brown rbi single; Jayjohn relieved Hummel; Gaffin was hbp, Chavanne jacked a 3-run homer; Dotson tripled, Gibson doubled, rbi. Rebels down in order. Vols 40-6/13-3. Ole Miss 22-27/2-17.
#3 Arizona State upset by Utah 5-4
WP Mariah Ramirez. LP Mackenzie Popescue. After the Sun Devils stranded two top 1st, the Utes scored when Sweet doubled and scored on Dickman’s single. The Utes scored again bottom 2nd; when Mendenhall and Ramirez hit consecutive doubles. ASU scored top 3rd, Freeman singled, Steele doubled, rbi, and tied the score with a run in the 4th on Kemp’s leadoff homer. ASU took the lead on Kemp’s 2-run homer in the 6th. A double play bottom 7th put ASU on the thresshold of victory but with Everett on 3rd, Elliott walked. Fankhauser singled, rbi, 4-3. ASU pulled starter Dallas Escobedo. Sweet singled, rbi, game tied. B8th: Stewart walked, but was forced at 2nd by Everett who advanced on a passed ball; two out, Pacheco doubled in the winning run. ASU 38-6/9-4. Utah 20-23/5-11.
#6 Alabama upset by Mississippi State 3-2
WP Stephanie Becker LP Jackie Traina S Alison Owen. A sweet upset victory for Van Studemann. Bulldogs scored two runs, top 3rd, Echols and Winkfield scoring, scored what proved to be the winning run top 4th, Cooley scoring on Shape’s rbi single. Bama scored a run in the bottom on Fichtner’s homer and scored another run in the 5th on Hunt’s rbi single. After the Bulldogs stranded two in 6th, Owen relieved Becker. Traina led the Tide 6th with a single, but was stranded. State loaded bases with 2 out in 7th, no score. McCleney drew a two-out walk in the Bama 7th, no advance. Bama 38-7/10-6. Miss State 29-14/7-9.

UCLA had to be feeling the residual sting from last night; when Carda struck out Lavine, her 11th, that could have ended the game, but the 10th inning was extended by an error at 3rd, setting the stage for Hallie Wilson’s dramatic 2-run walkoff. Tonight, Carda reset, slamming a 2-out homer in the 1st off starter Estelle Pinon. The Bruins momentum carried into the 2nd; Satarake led with a solo shot; two out, Goulder doubled, Bennett walked, LaRosa jacked a 3-run homer; Nancy Bowling relieved Pinon, and gave up a 2-run homer to Carda. Goulder slugged a one-out homer top 3rd, 8-0. Wilson walked, scored for the Wildcats in the bottom. Bates led the Bruin 6th with a solo, the 6th UCLA roundtripper. One out, Moeai homered. Young belted a 2-run dinger for UofA in the bottom. Carda drove in a run; UCLA loaded the bases top 7th; Sataraka doubled, 2 rbi; 13-3. Arizona tried to rally; Wilson walked, Suitos singled, Rodriguez reached on a fielder’s choice, Wilson out at 3rd. Goodacre looked at a third strike. The Bruins out hit te Wildvats 16-6.
