Northwestern’s Amy Letourneau Selected as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week
April 2, 2013
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Continuing a growing trend of players who contribute both at the plate and from the circle, Northwestern sophomore Amy Letourneau has been chosen as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week for April 2.
The Laguna Niguel, Calif., native and current Big Ten Player of the Week hit .750 (6-for-8) at the dish with three runs scored, three walks, two HR’s, six RBIs, a .818 on-base percentage and a 1.500 slugging percentage. She also registered a perfect 2-0 record from the circle with her initial career no-hitter (the first for a NU pitcher since 2011), a 1.00 ERA and 16 strikeouts over 14 innings of work in a Big Ten set against Minnesota.
During her no-hit effort in the series opener, Letourneau fired 144 pitches, striking out 11 Gophers while also posting a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. On Saturday the pitcher/first baseman was a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish with a walk, a three-run homer and four RBIs. In the series finale she tossed another complete-game, drew a pair of free passes and crushed a two-run HR.
“This is such an amazing honor to be chosen for this award, especially with all of the great players around the country who have earned it already this season,” Letourneau said. “We had a great week of preparation leading up to last weekend, and it really helped us perform and take the next step as a team. We are playing with such a winning attitude right now both on defense and in the batter’s box, and I have been able to feed off of that confidence.”
Letourneau currently guides Northwestern from the circle with a 10-7 overall record, a 1.81 ERA, 14 complete games and 152 strikeouts over a team-best 112 innings of work. At the plate she boasts a .310 batting mark with three doubles, five HR’s and 14 RBIs.
“Amy has had great poise in big moments this season, and that is what it comes down to,” Northwestern head coach Kate Drohan said. “When we have to get an out in the circle or need that two-out RBI base hit, Amy is getting it done. She is really locked in right now.”
Next up for the Wildcats is a single home contest versus Loyola on Tues., April 2, before continuing a nine-game home stand by hosting Illinois in a three-game set at Drysdale Field over April 5-7.
