Florida’s Bruder Named USA Softball’s Collegiate Player of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball announced today that Florida’s Kelsey Bruder (Corona, Calif.) was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for the week of April 18-24. Bruder recorded two walk off hits over SEC rival Alabama helping Florida take the series.

“I’m so honored to have been chosen as National Player of the Week. This past series versus Alabama was an absolute thrill and I’m so glad I was able to come through for my teammates,” said Bruder. “Our success wouldn’t have been possible without every single one of them.”
The senior outfielder had two game-winning walk-off hits in Florida’s two wins over No. 3 Alabama, a first-pitch three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh in the Gators’ 6-5 win Saturday and an infield RBI single for the walk-off 3-2, nine-inning victory Sunday to take the series. In addition to her game-winning infield hit Sunday, Bruder also had a RBI on a single in the bottom of the eighth Sunday that counted as Florida’s first run of the game and started the rally to tie the game at two-all after eight innings.
“We are so honored for Kelsey to be recognized as USA Softball’s Collegiate Player of the Week,” Florida Head Coach Tim Walton said. “Kelsey’s performance last weekend was an incredible feat; she was so instrumental in all of our victories. For her to be a clutch performer says a lot about her preparation and a lot about what team work is all about.”

In the opening game loss, she tallied one of Florida’s three hits as Alabama took the first game. She also had both a triple and a homer in UF’s mid-week defeat over UCF, accounting for three of Florida’s eight runs and RBI in the contest. On the week, she hit .438 with eight RBI and four runs scored.

For her accomplishments, she was named the SEC Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and the third time this season. This is the second Player of the Week honor for Bruder, who first received the honor on May 12, 2009, and is also the second for this season for a University of Florida athlete.
