DePaul’s Verdun name USA Softball Collegiate National Player of the Week

OKLAHOMA CITY – For her outstanding efforts on both sides of the ball, DePaul sophomore Kirsten Verdun (Coal City, Ill.) was named the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Week for the week of March 26- April 1 the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today.

Verdun had an amazing weekend, shutting down a then-No. 11 Louisville on two different occasions. The Cardinals came into the weekend with a 28-game winning streak and were the last undefeated team in Division I.

“I’m very excited and kind of shocked,” said Verdun. “This was so unexpected. It is a really big honor, and it’s the first time I’ve gotten an award like this in college. It’s also a reassurance that when you do the right things, you are capable of helping your team succeed. The recognition is huge. We have a lot of great players on our team, and as a program we have built a pretty good resume. This can only help.”

In the pitching circle, Verdun shut down the Cardinal attack (one run in 14 innings with 11 strikeouts and no walks) in going 2-0. She had a 0.50 ERA in the two games and a Louisville team that was batting .337 only hit .104 vs. Verdun for the weekend.

Offensively, Verdun hit .375 against Louisville’s staff with one home run and four RBI. She hit the game-winning, three-run homer and pitched a two-hitter on Sunday in the 3-0 win that clinched the series for the Blue Demons.

“This is one of the highest honors you can receive,” said DePaul head coach Eugene Lenti. “It’s a credit to Kirsten and how hard she has worked. She executes the game plan, getting ahead in the count and keeping the ball in the park. And then on Sunday, she helps her own cause with a three-run homer to beat No. 11 Louisville 3-0. She was dominant on the mound and in the batter’s box.”
