Florida’s Gammel Named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America announced today that Florida’s Ensley Gammel (Bakersfield, Calif.) was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week for the week of March 29-April 4. The freshman pitcher and designated player was key in Florida’s three-game sweep over then-No.12 LSU, both in the circle and at the plate.
Gammel earned three of four wins for the Gators over the week, making two relief appearances and starting one game. The right-hander (7-0) did not allow an earned run in her 15 innings of work, while striking out 11 and walking only four. She came in to pitch four scoreless innings, giving up only one hit while striking out six at UCF and went on to allow only five hits and one walk in 11 innings of work (in two games) against No. 12 LSU.
“It’s truly an honor to earn be recognized. I am just glad I can contribute to my team’s wins as a freshman and happy that my coaches and my teammates put their confidence in me to go out and help get the job done,” said Gammel.
The freshman also produced at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs, an RBI and a sacrifice bunt in the same three games. She tallied the game-tying run at UCF to send the Gators into extras against the Knights and the game-tying run in the second win over LSU.
“Over the course of the week, Ensley really stepped up and I am so pleased with her efforts and her production. She is a special individual and her level of confidence has grown over the last weeks,” said Florida Head Coach Tim Walton. “She has thrown the ball well and she came in and really helped us get the win at UCF. She had three at bats all season and I brought her in to hit in a clutch situation against LSU and she came through with a hit and scored the tying run.”
