GAME NOTES
Florida 1, LSU 0. WP Lauren Haeger. LP Brittany Mack. Each team had 2 hits, typical of their battles during the SEC season. Bottom 6th: Castro walked, and advanced to 2nd on Medina’s sac bunt. Fagan flied out. Sami Fagan singled up the middle, rbi. After Haeger singled to open the Gators 6th, Rachele Fico relieved Mack and shut down the Gators. Haeger had 8 Ks. LSU left bases loaded in the 2nd and again in the 5th, taking advantage of Haeger’s 5 walks. Mack also worked out of a bases-loaded situation in the 2nd. the Tiger defense turned two inning-ending double plays in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Florida will face Tennessee.
Georgia Tech 6, Virginia 4. WP Hope Rush. LP Melanie Mitchell. Not as close as it seems. Tech led 6-0 until the top 7th when the Cavaliers scored their four runs.Gillen and Johnson hit solo homers. Earlier, Tech had three dingers: Rudnik, Rush and Bear all went yard. Georgia Tech will play the winner of North Carolina State vs Florida State.
Tennessee 2, Auburn 1. WP Ellen Renfroe 3H. LP Jenee Loree 4H. Each pitcher was tagged for a home run; Holly Baker’s solo in the 6th gave the Vols the win. Bottom 3rd: Lewis singled; Chavanne sac bunt; Lewis to 3rd on a wild pitch; two out, Shipman walked; Gibson singled, rbi. Bottom 6th: Baker led off with a home run. Bunning relieved Loree. Top 7th, two out, Mavromat homered.
California 4, Arizona State 2. WP Jolene Henderson. LP Mackenzie Popescue. Classic battle, stars pitching, stars fielding and batting at every position. The game began with Dallas Escobedo hurling for the Sun Devils, and she took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th. Boyd walked, scored on Caporuscio’s sac fly in the 4th. ASU scored top 6th when Freeman slugged a 2-out homer. But, Escobedo, who had given up just 4 hits, loaded the bases and walked in the two tying runs. One out, Ariotso walked; Williams singled; Kostreba walked; Decker hit into a fielder’s choice, Arioto out at home 6-2. Bases loaded, Danielle Henderson drew an rbi walk. Jones followed with an rbi walk. ASU sent Popescue to the circle; she struck out Echevarria, 2-2. Top 7th, after a walk by Boyd, the Sun Devils went down in order. Bottom 7th: J Reid reached on a bunt single; Vonk struck out swinging, Arioto jacked a 1-0 pitch over right field, 2 rbi on a walkoff homer.
Stanford upset by Utah 6-0. WP Generra Nielson. LP Teagan Gerhart. The Utes have had a tough first year in The Pacific 12, with 7 opponents ranked in the Top 25. But today surely eased some pain. Nielson held the Cardinal to 4 hits, while coasting behind a 5-run second inning, highlighted by a 3-run homer by Hoopiiani, and a 2-run double by Clements.
Georgia 6, Kentucky 4. WP Erin Arevalo.d d Not as close as scoreboard indicated. Bulldogs plated 2 in 1st on Razey double. Bottom 2nd: Georgia loaded bases; Goulder scored on Wilson sac fly; Sandberg belted a 3-run homer, Dawgs led 6-0 after two. Cervanted led the Wildcats 4th with a homer. Kentucky scored three runs in the 7th; two on a double by O’Brien. Georgia will face the winner of the Alabama/Mississippi State game.
North Carolina 10, Boston College 4. WP Lori Spingola. LP Morgan Kidd. D’Argento opened the game with a double, scored on a sac bunt by Delagramm. The Tar Heels took control, bottom 2nd. Scarboro doubled in a tying run; Wheeler jacked a 3-run shot, 4-1. Carolina added 3 in thew 2nd; Orr rbi groundout; Scarboro 2-run homer. 7-1. Wilkins scored on Speer’s single in the BC 4th. LoBue singled in 2 runs in the BC 5th. UNC sealed the deal bottom 6th with Blake’s 3-run homer.
Florida State 6, NC State 2. WP Monica Perry. LP Morgan Peeler. NC State pitchers issued 13 walks. One out, bottom 1st, Jackson walked, O’Brien slugged 2-run homer. Three more walks loaded the bases; Weiman relieved Peeler. Gomez ripped a 2-run double. 5-0.O’Briend drew a bases-loaded rbi walk in the Seminole 5th. NC State scored its runs top 7th; after loading the bases, 2 runs scored on errors.
UCLA 10, Oregon 0 (6). WP Jessica Hall. LP Jessica Moore. A very tight 1-0 game blew up in the 6th when the Bruins scored 9 runs, all earned, off the Ducks ace Moore. UCLA scored the first run of the game top 5th; Fox singled, one out, scored on Snow double. Top 6th: Bates singled, scored on Yudin double Tiumalu singled, rbi; one out, Schroeder singled, rbi; bases loaded, Bates walked, rbi; Hovinga relieved Moore; Camuso jacked a grand slam. UCLA outhit Oregon 11-3. UCLA 36-16/12-10. Oregon 37-15/11-9.
Alabama 5, Mississippi State 2. WP Jackie Traina. LP Kylie Vry. If the SEC awarded coach enthusiasm, it would go to Vann Stuedeman; well before the Bulldogs scored two runs in the 6th, Vann was physically and vocally building confidence. Bama scored 3 runs, bottom 3rd, an rbi single by Locke, a 2-run single by Hunt. Dunlap relieved Vry. Braud and Fenton opened the Bama 4th with singles, setting the tage for rbi’s by Hunt and Boccia. The Bulldogs owned the 6th. Shape led with a triple; scored on Lanahan’s double. One out, Lanahan on 3rd, Cooley singled back to Traina who looked at home then threw an errant ball to 1st; Lanhan scored. But, Nesbit lined out, Fisher grounded back to Traina. MSU went down in order in the 7th. Alabama 48-7. MSU 33-22. Bama plays Georgia on Friday.
Virginia Tech 5, Maryland 2. WP Jasmin Harrell. LP Kendra Knight. Each starter was charged with 4 hits, includinga homer. The TRerps were on the threshhold of a first round victory, leading 1-0 on Beards rbi single in the 4th; until Tech amassed 3 of its hits bottom 6th. McGoldrick was hbp, and advanced on a wild pitch. Courtney Liddle singled; and stole 2nd. One out, Spaw walked. Rose singled, rbi, tying the game. Banks crushed a grand slam. 5-1. Van Meter homered for the Terps in the 7th. Tech 39-18. Maryland 34-20.
Arizona 11, Oregon State 4. Starting the 6th. Down 3-0 after three, the Wildcats scored 8 runs in the 4th, 3 in the 5th. In the 4th, Arriola belted a 3-run homer; De Ponte slugged a grand slam. Shelby Babcock pitching for Arizona.

Spy will also update brackets as games are decided. Several Wednesday games were not played, and those brackets will have to be amended..

The 2012 MEAC Softball Championship tournament gets underway Thursday, May 10 beginning at 10 a.m.
Savannah State (S1) will face Hampton (N4) while Delaware State (N1) will meet North Carolina A&T (S4) in the first games of the day. Games three and four will include Coppin State (N2) against Florida A&M (S3) and Bethune-Cookman (S2) against Norfolk State (N3), both games will begin at 1:30 p.m. The championship finale is set for Saturday, May 12 beginning at 1 p.m. A complete tournament schedule of events is available on MEACsports.com.
