Maryland 4, NC State 3. Close from the start. Wolfpack scored 2 top 1st on Alblbritten 2-run homer. Terps responded with 2 in bottom; Branson rbi single, Hickey sac fly. NC State broke tie top 2nd on Abbott lead-off homer, all 3 runs charged to starter Kerry Hickey. After Galindo singled to lead the Terps 3rd , Hanafin walked; Galinda was out at 3rd on Branson’s fielder’s choice; reached on a fielder’s choice and Hanafin went to 3rd on an error at short, loading the bases; Maier reached on another error at short, Hanafin scored the tying run. Knight relieved Hickey to pitch the 7th. The Wolfpack loaded the bases on 2 walks and an hbp; no outs; but they were left full. Leading off for Maryland, Ghent was hbp; Acosta sac bunt; Galindo singled, Ghent sconing run on Hanafin’s single. Each team made 2 errors, each had 6 hits. North Carolina State eliminated.
Tennessee 2, Auburn 1. A combination of Ellen Renfroe’s 19Ks in relief of sister Ivy, and stellar defense which left 9 Auburn runners on base,, put the Vols into the finals of the SEC, when they will face the winner of the rain-delayed Alabama-Georgia game. Note: there is expectation that these four teams plus LSU will receive NCAA bids.) After Auburn left runners at 2nd and 3rd, top 1st, the Vols scored both runs. Chavanne and Grieve singled; Gibson singled to 2nd, on the ensuing error, Chavanne scored. Burchell singled, Grieve scored. Two left. Eisterhold and Colton walked; Ellen Renfroe relieved Ivy Renfroe. Harrison walked, loading the bases, no outs. Renfroe struck out the side, leaving the bases loaded. Top 3rd: Guzman reached on an error in left (which caused Col defensive changes), Smiley walked; Renfroe recorded her second K of the inning; Colton singled, rbi; Guzman scoring; Renfroe nailed her third rbi of the at-bat. Two left. Vols 5th: One out, Chavanne walked, Grieve singled, Angela Bunner relieved Loree. Two fly balls stranded the 2 runners. Renfroe gave up a walk in the 6th, but struck out three. Auburn went down in order in the 7th. Auburn eliminated.
Michigan 8, Michigan State 0 (6). Outstanding efffort by Taylor. Chidester singled in 2 runs, bottom 1st. In first 3 innings, Taylor fanned 6 of 9. Bottom 3rd: Doyle singled, Shaw walked, both advanced on wild pitch; Chidester walked; Lane walked, rbi; Blanchard singled, 2 rbi. Evans scored in 4th on Shaw’s rbi single. Taylor struck out the side in the Spartans 6th. Bottom: One out, Doyle singled, Shaw homered to right field. UM 60-4/17-2. State 27-26/6-13.
Fordham 2, Massachusetts 1 (10). Bottom 10th: Wiggins doubled to left center, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch. Crowley walked. Bright reached on a fielder’s choice, Wiggins scored.
North Carolina 9, Boston College 0 (5). Spingola’s pitching (no hitter) seemed to inspire her teammates who scored 9 runs on 7 hits to run-rule BC. Top 1st, Spingola struck out the side while giving up 2 walks. Bottom half: the Tar Heels scored when Foulks doubled in 2 runs. UNC scored twice in the 3rd; Nece walked, Dickey slugged a 2-run homer. Top 5th: Spingola struck out the side. Bottom: a quintet of Tar Heels crossed the plate. Foulks walked; Blake singled, pinch runner Williams scored on an error. McKinney walked. One out, Mako walked, loading the bases. Vitale reached on a fielder’s choice, Blake out at home. Wheeler hammered a walkoff grand slam. North Carolina now faces Maryland, whom it beat 2 of 3 last weekend. Boston College eliminated.
Virginia 6, Georgia Tech 0. Arguably the most important victory in the Cavaliers 24-30 season. Georgia Tech was 44-10, and ranked 16th naionally. Virginia racked 11 hits to 4 for Tech which made 3 errors. Adkins was tagged for the first 2 runs, Lindsey Anderson the final four. UVA scored twice, top 2nd; Harris walked but was called out for leaving early; Bowdren singled, stole 2nd, and scored on Skinkis single. Byxbe singled, Skinkis singled. A double play thwarted a Cavs rally in the 3rd. Anderson relieved Adkins. Top 5th: Giannina Cippoloni walked, after a sacrifice, Erica Cippoloni walked; Giannina Cippoloni scored on Harris’ single. Bowdren singled; Erica Cippoloni was out at 3rd. Top Pittman walked; Erica Cippoloni singled; Harris sacrificed; Bowdren singled, Pittman scored. Bowdren stole 2nd; Skinkis walked. Harvey closed the scoring with a 2-run single. Mitchell struck out the last 2 Yellow Jackets. Virginia will play the winner of Florida State vs Virginia Tech, while Maryland plays North Carolina. Georgia Tech eliminated.
Louisville 6, Notre Dame 0. The Cardinals eliminated the Irish from the Big East tournament for the second year in a row, also snapping Notre Dame’s 14-game winning streak. Notre Dame’s last four losses at the event have been at the hands of the Cardinals (36-17), who were this year’s fifth-seeded squad.The defeat snapped a 14-game winning streak for Notre Dame (45-9), whose last loss came ironically came to Louisville during a regular-season meeting on April 17. The Cardinals scored in the 2nd on Fowler’s rbi single. Notre Dame loaded bases in the 3rd on an hbp, a bunt single, and an intentional walk, but couldn’t score. Bottom 3rd: Esteban jacked a 3-run homer, 4-0. Valdivia threw 2.0 innings of two-run ball, including a homer by Keller, 6-0, and Laura Winter held the Cardinals to one hit in the final 2.0 scoreless frames. Notre Dame eliminated.
Oregon State 4, Washington 3. Huskies struck top 1st; Pohlman singled, but was forced at 2nd by Salling; 2 out, Ingelsby homered, 2-0. Bottom 2nd: Sanchez singled; after Chandler sacrifice, scored on Kutz double. UW 3rd: one out, Salling singled, forced at 2nd by Williams; Williams scored on Ingelsby single. Bottom 3rd: Beavers scored another run; Lowe singled, Beltran singled, with 2 out, runners advanced on wild pitch; Lowe scored on Sanchez single. 3-2. Bottom 6th: Beavers tied score on Roderfeld homer. Clifton relieved Ingelsby. Chandler and Kutz singled. Jones relieved Clifton. Guzy walked, loading the bases. Hall walked, rbi. Huskies rallied in 7th: Jones, Pohlman and Salling singled; but Pohlman was called out for interference. Williams looked at a third strike. Clifton ground out. Washington 33-14. Oregon State 19-27.
Georgia 4, Alabama 2. Both had turns at being the nation’s #1, and the Crimson Tide was the regular season SEC champion. On this day, the #5 seed moves on to play Tennessee for the tournament championship and automatic NCAA berth, while the #1 seed Alabama is eliminated. Bottom 1st: Fenton singled with one out, scored on Larsen’s double. Bama 2nd: Traina and Hunt singled; Dawson singled, loading the bases. Conley ground into a double play, but pinch runner Patterson scored. 2-0 Bama when the rain delay occurred. Couey scored for the Bulldogs on Razey’s rbi groundout in the 4th. Georgia 6th: Wiggins reached on an error, one out, Goler walked; two out, Razey slugged a 3-run homer. 4-2 Dawgs. Top 7th: Trout, Pauly and Wiggins singled; Dunne relieved Traina and held off the Georgians. Bama had shown no offense since the 2nd; now it loaded the bases, with 2 out; Locke fouled out. Alabama 46-8. Alabama eliminated.
California 9, Arizona 4. The Bears came out growling, scoring 4 runs top 1st. Jamia Reid singled, stole 2nd, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch; Vonk walked, stole 2nd, went to 3rd on a catcher throwing error, Reid scored. Williams walked, stole 2nd; Decker hit into a fielder’s choice, Vonk out at home. Jopnes reached on a fielder’s choice; rbi. Wallace Walked, loading the bases; Elia Reid sac fly, rbi. Wildcats clawed backinto contention in the 3rd. One out, Lastrapes and Schutzler singled; two out, Chambers jacked a 3-run homer. 4-3. Cal and Arizona traded runs in the 4th; Reid singled and scored in the top; Buchanan walked and scored in the bottom. Cal 6th: Kenzi Fowler pitching. Wallace walked, E Reid singled, rbi; J reid singled, rbi; Vonk singled, rbi; Williams reached on an error at 3rd, loading the bases; J Reid was out at home on Decker’s fielders choice; Vonk scored the fourth run of the at-bat. Babcock replaced Fowler for the 7th. Both teams went down in order. California 38-10/14-6. Arizona 40-15/11-9.
UCLA 7, Oregon 4. Top 1st: Di salvatore reached on error at 3nd, scored for Bruins on Harrison single. Ducks took 2-1 lead, bottom 2nd; one out, Vitek and Peterson singled; Cuico fielder’s choice, Vitek out at 3rd. Burger reached on an error in center, two runs scored. Top 3rd: DiSalvatore and Harrison singled; with 2 out, Bates reached on an error at short, loading the bases; Fox singled, rbi. Bottom 3rd: Chambers homered. Hall relieved Destiny Rodino. UCLA loaded the bases in the 4th, no score. Oregon added to its lead when Vitek homered. The Bruins tied in the 5th: two out, Tiumalu reached on an error at 3rd; Lindvall cracked a 2-run homer. One out in the Bruins 6th: DiSalvatore singled, Rumfeld relieved Moore; Schroeder walked, Bates ended the scoring with a 3-run homer. UCLA 33-16/9-11. Oregon 38-14/10-10.
Stanford 6, Arizona State 1. The Sun Devils, who are the Pac 10 regular season champions, lost just their fourth Pac 10 game. The Cardinal took a 4-0 lead, top 3rd; Becerra was hbp, advanced on Gerhart’s sac, and scored on Hassman’s hmomer. Hansen singled, Rich homered. Hillary Bach relieved Popesue. ASU 3rd: Castillo walked; with 2 out, advanced to 3rd on a wild pitch, scored on a wild pitch. ASU stranded 2 runners in the 4th. Hassman doubled, scored with one out in Cardinal 5th on Rich single.
