Oklahoma Back to a Unanimous No. 1 in the Final Regular-Season USA Today/NFCA Division I Poll

May 14, 2013

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A sweep of an in-state rival helped Oklahoma (47-4) retain its lofty position at No. 1 for the 10th consecutive week, according to the release of the final USA Today/NFCA Division I softball poll of the 2013 regular season.

The Sooners received all 31 possible first-place votes from the committee to again become the unanimous choice for the top spot in the rankings after sweeping a three-game series from Oklahoma State (10-1 in 5 inn., 4-0, 5-0).

Florida (52-7) remained at No. 2 after totaling 27 runs in rolling past then-No. 9 Alabama (8-4), Georgia (9-5) and then-No. 8 Missouri (10-4) on the way to an SEC Tournament title. Oregon (46-9) held steady in the third spot despite dropping two-of-three match-ups during a Pacific-12 Conference set against Arizona State (45-10). The Sun Devils rose a single position from fifth to fourth following their series victory over the Ducks, replacing Tennessee (44-10) which dropped a slot to No. 5 after topping South Carolina (5-0) but suffering a shutout (0-3) at the hands of then-No. 8 Missouri during the SEC Tournament semifinals.

No. 6 Texas picked up a victory over then-No. 21 Baylor (2-1) to swap positions with Michigan. The seventh-ranked Wolverines christened their Big Ten Tournament stay with a 3-2 win over Ohio State before suffering a semifinal upset at the hands of eventual league champ Wisconsin, 9-3.

Missouri (35-11) stayed at No. 8 following its impressive run to the SEC Tournament Championship Game. The Tigers shutout then-No. 25 Arkansas (8-0 in 5 inn) and then-No. 4 Tennessee (3-0) before running out of gas against the second-ranked Gators in the title tilt, 10-4. SEC Western Division rivals Alabama (42-13) and LSU (40-14) continued to hold down the ninth and 10th spots in the listing, respectively.

An 8-0 (5 inn.) SEC Tournament run-rule defeat versus then-No. 8 Missouri was enough to bounce Arkansas from this week’s poll as Wisconsin moved in to replace the Razorbacks at the No. 25 position.

The USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll is voted on by 31 NCAA Division I head coaches, one representing each conference. Current 2013 records are shown while first-place votes are in parentheses.
