NCAA SUPER REGIONALS DAY ONE

TUSCALOOSA

Alabama 4, Michigan 1. WP Jackie Traina 3H, 15K.  LP Haylie Wagner 6H. With both pitchers doing their jobs, first game was low-key.  Traina struck out the first batter in every inning.  Three of Bama’s six hits were doubles.  Bama scored, bottom 2nd; Boccia walked with one out; advanced on a wild pitch; Conley doubled sharply down the left field line.  The Tide in effect iced the game in the 5th.  One out, Braud reached on an error; Fenton singled; Hunt doubled in 2 runs.  Two out, Lunceford singled up the middle, Hunt scoring.  Michigan singled top 1st, but didn’t get another hit unti8l the 6th  when Sappingfield walked; two out, Lane doubled to left center, rbi.  UM has 2 on in the 4th on walks but were stranded. Bama goes a game up in the best of three series.

 

TEMPE

Louisiana-Lafayette 6, Arizona State 0.  WP Jordan Wallace.  LP Dallas Escobedo.  The Sun Devils are defending national champions, but the Ragin’ Cajuns had beaten ASU and Escobedo in the season and came in with confidence they could take Game One.  When Escobedo was relieved in the 7th; the Cajuns had 12 hits and six runs.  The tone was set in the 1st  when the Cajuns racked 2 hits, the same number the Sun Devils would knock in the while game.  ULL had 2 more hits in the 3rd.  Top 4th: Cormier led off with a homer on a 1-2 pitch.  Draheim jacked a 1-1 pitch over the same left field wall.  Fernandez singled, but was stranded.  ULL up 2-0.  ULL 5th: Meyers doubled down left field line; Myers scored on Haack’s sac fly.  3-0.  ULL 7th: Smith and Myers singled; Haack singled, rbi.  Cherry singled to right center, driving in 2 runs.  Popescue relieved Escobedo.  Wallace had pitched a gem of a 2-hitter.  Louisiana Lafayette goes a game up in the best of three contest.
