Stanford 5, Alabama 2.  The combination of crafty, spot-on pitching by Gerhart, timely hitting by the Cardinal bottom-of-the order, and surprising miscues by the CerimsonTide (3 errors) resulted in the first decision — and first upset — of the 2011 NCAA Super Regionals.  Bama did  not record a hit until bottom 4th, when it was trailing 5-0 — then Larsen jacked a pitch over left center.  The Cardinal scored 3 runs, top 2nd.  Dunne, who had control problems inthe eearly going, walking 2 in the 1st, issued a leadoff walk to Koutz; Burns singled, Becerra walked; Gerhart  ground out 3-4, but Klutz scored.  Hassman, on a 2-2 count, singled in2 runs.  Miller reached on an error at 3rd to open the Cardinal 3rd.  Koutz singled, both advanced on Burns sac.  Becerra reached on an error in left, 2 more runs scored, 5-0.  Stanford left runners at 2nd and 3rd in the 4th.  In the bottom, Frnton looked at a third strike, but Larsen hit her dinger.  Dunne struck out 2 of 3 top 5th.  Gerhart struck out the side.  One out, Cardinal 6th, Hassman and Hansen singled (Hansen’s second), with 2 out, both advanced on a passed ball; Pura struck out.  Gerhart has key strikeouts, none more important than in the bottom of the 6th.  Conley and Braud singled.  They advanced on Fenton’s sac bunt.  Larsen poped up.  Locke, a leading home run hitter for the Tide, had the crowd on its feet, but struck out.  Stanford went down in order, top 7th.  One out in the bottom, Boccia singled; Hunt doubled, pinch runner Davis scored.  Pinch hitter Traina popped to 2nd.  Conley flied out to right — after a bit of crowd roaring drama when her popup dropped into catcher Gerhart’s glove and popped out, giving Bama a fourth out.

Arizona State 3, Texas A&M 2.  The Aggies were within an out of upsetting the Sun Devils.  ASU scored a run bottom 2nd on Parlich’s rbi double.  The Aggies nailed Escobedo for just 2 hits — she had 15 Ks — but those hits were home runs by Garza in the 4th and Dumezich in the 7th.  Bottom, the Sun Devils loaded the bases on a  hit (Haro), walk (Boyd) and hbp (Rogers).  Castillo slashed a hit into the hole — and Aggie fans argued there should have been runner interference (an arguable point on TV replays) — but the tying (Haro) and winning (Boyd) runs scored. (Gametracker quit in the top of the 7th, Spy switched to the telly.)
