Notre Dame’s Laura Winter Chosen as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week
May 7, 2013
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a week chocked full of incredible individual efforts throughout Division I softball, contributing from both the circle and at the dish while guiding Notre Dame to its 14th all-time BIG EAST Conference title proved enough to earn junior pitcher/infielder Laura Winter a selection as the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week for May 7.
“It is truly an honor to be named Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week,” Winter said. “I could never have had a week like this without the hard work of my teammates and their continued support.”
The San Diego, Calif., native was an impressive 4-0 from the circle with a 1.75 ERA, three complete games, including a pair of triumphs over then-No. 9 Louisville to clinch the league crown, and 21 strikeouts over 24 innings of work, while also batting .533 (8-for-15) with four runs scored, a double, three HR’s and six RBIs. The reigning BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week started off her impressive efforts with wins over Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan (hit two HR’s versus WMU) heading into the high-profile series against the nationally-ranked Cardinals. Needing a victory in the finale against U of L to take the BIG EAST title, Winter fired a complete-game, allowing just a single run, knocked in a tally in the first inning and scored one of the deciding runs in UND’s 3-1, series-clinching triumph.
She currently leads the Fighting Irish pitching staff with a 27-9 overall record, a 1.84 ERA, 26 complete games, five solo shutouts and 272 strikeouts over 232.1 innings of work, while also possessing a .368 batting average, 12 doubles and squad highs in HR’s (17) and RBIs (52).
“I am so proud of how Laura has led in the circle and at the plate this season,” Notre Dame head coach Deanna Gumpf said. “She has elevated her game to become a threat on both sides of the ball. I love her confidence and her fight.”
Winter and her Notre Dame teammates will return to the diamond on Thurs., May 9, when they open BIG EAST Tournament action against Seton Hall.
