6-1-2012 Game Notes Oklahoma California

Game 5: Oklahoma 3, California 0

  • Fourth-seeded Oklahoma defeated top-ranked and No. 1 Cal, 3-0, in Game 5 of the Women’s College World Series to advance to play in Game 11 on Sunday at noon CT. Cal will play Saturday at 8:30 p.m. CT against the winner of Oregon-Tennessee.

  • The Sooners won their 10th straight game. They have outscored their seven postseason opponents, 53-6.

  • Friday was the fifth meeting between Cal and Oklahoma in the WCWS, with the Golden Bears winning three of the previous four contests. The only other time OU defeated Cal in WCWS play was in 2000 when the Sooners posted a 2-1 first-round victory en route to winning the national title.

  • OU’s Keilani Ricketts tied her season high with 16 strikeouts and fell two shy of the single-game (seven innings or less) WCWS record of 18 set by Cat Osterman vs. Arizona State in 2006. It was Ricketts’ 24th game this season with 10 or more strikeouts.

  • Ricketts broke her own OU Women’s College World Series record for strikeouts in a game. She struck out 11 USF batters Thursday in OU’s 5-1 win.

  • Ricketts extended her streak of innings without allowing an earned run to 40.0.

  • Ricketts also drove in OU’s second run of the game by drawing a bases-loaded walk in the fourth frame.

  • Freshman Georgia Casey hit her 10th home run of the year to give OU a 3-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Casey became the fourth Sooner to hit at least 10 homers this season.

  • Casey’s home run upped OU’s nation-leading total to 97 this season.

  • OU got on the board first with a one-run double from freshman Lauren Chamberlain in the top of the third. Chamberlain is now tied for second on OU’s single-season extra base hits list (39) with Lisa Carey (2000 season) and is just three away from the record of 42 held by Becky Burroughs (1994).

  • Cal fell for the first time in six games and lost for just the sixth time overall this season. The Golden Bears dropped to 57-6 on the year and to 20-21 all-time in the WCWS.

  • Cal failed to score for just the third time this season. The Bears were also shut out by fellow 2012 WCWS teams Oregon on April 21 and Arizona State on May 12.

  • Cal committed a season-high three errors for just the third time this season (also against Oregon State on May 5 and Texas on March 15).

  • The Golden Bears logged two hits in the game. Jace Williams singled in the bottom of the second and Victoria Jones singled in the bottom of the seventh.

  • Tonight’s attendance of 9,209 set a WCWS single-session record. The previous record of 9,080 (Session 5) was set two years ago (Georgia vs. Florida and Arizona vs. Hawaii). Session records have been set for each of this year’s three sessions (8,149 for Session 1; 8,235 for Session 2).
