June 15, 2010
STARKVILLE, Miss. – The 2010 National Champions UCLA were the unanimous choice to top the final USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll of the season, the Association announced on Tuesday.
After being ranked in the Top 10 all season long, the Bruins vaulted from fifth to first in the final poll by making it through all three portions of the National Tournament, including the Women’s College World Series, without losing a game.
National runners-up Arizona (52-14) were the unanimous second place team in the poll, while national semi-finalist Georgia (50-13) came in at third.
The other national semi-finalist, Tennessee, moved from 16th to fourth in the last poll, while previous No. 1 Washington rounded out the top spots in fifth.
Three new teams joined the poll for its final edition after posting strong showings in the tournament. Super Regionalist BYU led the way at No. 15, while Louisiana-Lafayette, also a Super Regional qualifier, followed closely behind in 16th. North Carolina was the final of the three new additions at 24th, after making it to the Seattle Regional championship.
Missing the cut for the final poll of the season were Massachusetts, Notre Dame and Florida State who were ranked 21st, 24th and 25th, respectively, in the last poll of the regular season.
The USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll is voted on by NCAA Division I head coaches, one representing each conference. Final 2010 records are shown, first-place votes are in parentheses.
