JESSICA SPIGNER TO LEAVE TENNESSEE SOFTBALL PROGRAM

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – University of Tennessee junior Jessica Spigner will not return to the Lady Vol softball program for her final season of eligibility, Co-Head Coach Ralph Weekly announced on Thursday. “The move was in the best interest of both parties,’’ Ralph Weekly said. “I appreciate her contributions and wish her well in the future.’’ The Santa Clarita, Calif., native hit .325 overall in 57 appearances during UT’s 49-12 campaign, blasting a team-best 16 HR’s to go along with 12 doubles and 53 RBIs. Spigner completes her stay at Rocky Top with a .332 career batting average over 176 total contests and ranks second in UT history in both HR’s (38) and slugging percentage (.644), sixth in total RBIs (159) and tied for ninth in doubles (40).

VANN STUEDEMAN OUT AT BAMA
Meeting with local reporters, newly-returned Alabama Coach Patrick Murphy informed that long-time pitching coach Vann Stuedeman has been dismissed.  No word on a successor, nor a reason.  Murphy said, “Just a business decision. I’m going in a different direction. She’s been a friend for 11 years, and that was a tough decision to make but one I felt was best for the program.”  Reporters had noted that, when Murphy accepted the LSU position, assistant coach Aly Habetz would be going with him to Baton Rouge, no mention of Stuedeman.  By Wednesday, her name had been removed from the official Crimson Tide roster.

ISF RECEIVES GRANT FROM EASTON FOUNDATIONS
The title sponsor of the last two Youth World Cup tournaments, Easton Foundations, has committed to a four-year grant to the International Softball Federation. The amount of the grant was not disclosed, but ISF President Don Porter said, “We are most grateful to the Easton Foundations for this generous commitment. They have been largely responsible for our having been able to put on the last two Youth World Cups and this grant will certainly help toward our ongoing youth development projects and events.” The 2010/2011 Youth World Cup, an age 16-and-under fast pitch tournament, was held at the ISF world headquarters complex in Plant City, Florida, in late December/early January, and followed the (August) 2009 edition that had taken place in the Czech Republic.
