Wagners Gold and Newtown Rock won the two ASA Gold berths at the ASA Central

Regional Qualifier in Hughesville, MD.  Wagners defeated Newtown 1-0.

Report from a neutral observer:  “They were clearly the best two teams there. The winner’s bracket final Sun AM gave Wagner’s the first berth over Newtown in an excellent 1-0, 70 minute game. Wagner’s scored in the first when Salvarola got a two out hit, advanced on a WP/PB, and came home on a single by Ashley Thomas. After that it was all good pitching and scintillating infield defense by both teams. It’s funny how one really good game can make a whole weekend worth the trip. That was one of those games! WP-Heather Keifer, ’11 from Potomac Falls HS, Sterling Va, verbal to JMU (2 hits). LP-Sam Greiner, ’11 from Sparta HS, Sparta NJ, verbal to USF.”

Afterward, Newtown Rock defeated Severna Park to close out the losers bracket.

SPY is having some health issues and saw just three games on Saturday.  Thought Wagners was very much the best team; very strong with shortstop Kourtney Salvarola and Casey Alcorn (2012) at 2nd providing solid middle infield defense.  Salvarola, who has signed with South Florida, has been selected for the USA Junior Women’s team.  Kiefer (2011) also pitched the 9-1 win Saturday over Richmond Ruckus.  Salvarola, Shaelynn Braxton, Sarah Onorato, and Adrienne Gebele had rbi hits.  We saw Ruckus in two games, the loss to Wagners and the 5-0 loss to the Shamrocks.  In both games, the left side of the Ruckus infield was impressive, with 2013 Kassie Moeller at short, and 2011 Marianna Stephenson at 3rd.  Wagner’s first game was a 7-2 win over Virginia Lady Eagles.

Alexa Larkin, a 2011 committed to Pittsburgh, pitched the Shamrock victory over Ruckus.  Four runs in the 3rd dominated the game —  a double by Kate Sims (2012), with rbi’s by Macy Jones (2012), Khristin Kyllo (Princeton), Hailey Smith (LSU) (2 rbi) and Jessica Burk  (2011).

Earlier, the Shamrocks lost in extra innings 5-4 to Riviera Beach Spirit.  Morgan Lashley (2011) took the loss. Shamrock Marcy Bowdren (UVA) had given her team a 4-2 lead top 9th with a two-run single.  But, the Spirit got even with a triple and sac fly and double, and a final rbi single.

SPY previously posted the six berths awarded this weekend in Florida.
ASA has not posted berths awarded at other tournaments this past weekend, and still shows nine on its national summary.
