USA ROUTS BOTSWANA
CARACAS, Venezuela – The offensive fire of USA Softball came alive in today’s 20-1, 3-inning, victory over Botswana as everyone in the lineup reached base in at least one at bat at the ISF Women’s Softball World Championships. The United States faces one of its most storied World Championship opponents in Australia tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT.
USA Softball took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI double by Vicky Galindo (Union City, Calif.) and a two-run double by Ashley Charters (Beaverton, Ore.) and tacked on one more in the second off a sac fly by Chelsea Bramlett (Cordova, Tenn.) to plate Lauren Lappin (Anaheim, Calif.) who singled.
Jennie Finch (La Mirada, Calif.) made her first start of the 2010 Worlds and went on for the three-inning win. Finch recorded six strikeouts with only one batter reaching on catcher’s interference.
“The scoreboard may show a lopsided USA victory but today was a big day for Botswana. This is their first World Championships and that shows that our sport is global. By Botswana qualifying, it is proof that our sport is continuing to grow world-wide. I hope that by us coming out and playing USA Softball, we can be a good example for them. I have to give Botswana a hand for coming out and competing. I wish them the best of luck in the future.”
The offense exploded in the third inning scoring 16 runs. Lappin led the team in inning going 2-for-2 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Lappin finished the game going 3-for-3. Charters, competing in her first World Championship, was also 3-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. During the third inning, each player reached at least two times off of 10 hits, two errors, two walks and four hit by pitches.
The USA holds a 14-5 lead in the 45 year history of World Championship games. The last U.S. lost to Australia came in 1998, 1-2 (12 inning loss) in pool play.
