(Surrey, BC) The Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship happening July 5 – 11 is all about celebrating and inspiring youth both on and off the field and an exciting series of four competitive games between two of the top teams in the world will be a big part of making this happen.

Fresh from the Women’s World Softball Championships in Caracas, Venezuela, Team Canada will compete against Team USA in a marquee game series July 8 – 11 at Softball City, Surrey, BC, that is sure to thrill Canada’s hometown crowd and delight the youth teams present in the tournament.

“When Canada and the USA play, the fans have come to expect some pretty intensely heated competition and we’re delighted that these two teams have agreed to showcase their skills to entertain the sports fan and help to inspire the youth of the sport.  They love competing in Surrey and are ready to put on a show for the all the fans that come to Softball City to watch some of the best softball action in the world,” stated Greg Timm, Chairman of the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship.

Canadian softball superstars, Team Canada pitcher Danielle Lawrie of Langley, BC, recently named NCAA Softball Player of the year for the second time in a row and Jennifer Yee of North Delta, one of the three 2010 nominees for the same award are on the Team Canada roster and slated to compete in the event.

Also proud additions from BC to the Team Canada roster are Charlotte Dolan of Coquitlam, Melanie Matthews of Surrey and Jennifer Salling of Port Coquitlam.

Team Canada will be playing a game per day July 5 through 11.  Leading up to the much anticipated games vs Team USA, Canada will play the Washington Absolute Blast, a US club team, also well known to the local softball crowd.  These games will run Monday, July 5 through Wednesday, July 7.

All Team Canada games will start at 7pm each evening, July 5 – 10 with the Sunday, July 11 game commencing at 3:30pm following the Showcase and Futures finals.

Fans are encouraged to wear their red and white, come early and enjoy the pre-game Celebration of Softball activities and cheer on Team Canada in this summer showdown at Softball City.  It’s fun for the whole family!

The Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship was organized to replace the Canada Cup Futures (U19) and Showcase (16U) tournaments for 2010 in order to carry on the Canada Cup spirit of promoting the development of the great game of softball by helping young female athletes reach for their personal best both on and off the field.  It is an event geared to celebrate and inspire youth through sport.

One hundred forty-nine teams (149) have been entered into the TNT Classic’s 23 pools for their annual summer showcase.  The pools include 16s in separate pools.  There is a link on SPY’s home page to the TNT web site.
