(The schedule published by Canada indicates that the USA will play a second game tonight against the California ‘s. Spy will update this report.)

Spy comment:  the 2011 national team lacks the stars from past championship teams – Finch, Osterman, Abbott, Watley, Mendoza, Duran, Lowe, Lappin, Galindo et al – but what it may currently lack in media pedigree  (until it wins a championship) this team more than compensates with an irredeemable characteristic – it knows how to win.  The 2011 team has won with the short game, as well as with the long ball.  Markedly, they win with a total team effort.  Scouting the box scores every night, the USA has been using a variety of lineups – and every player on the roster has contributed.  Their path through the Canadian Open augurs well for a winning performance at next week’s World Cup.

California A’s 2, Australia 0
The A’s are not strangers to followers of American softball.

Megan Denny, who starred for Texas, pitched the shutout with 11Ks.  Kaia Parnaby took the loss.  Ashley Carter scored in the 3rd on a single by Victoria Galasso.  The A’s added an insurance run in the 7th;  Carter singled again, and scored on a wild pitch.
