Comment: No coach enjoys being second-guessed, and Kenny Eriksen has one of the lower tolerance points in softball.  Holding Chamberlain out of the final game, despite an rbi double against Puerto Rico in the afternoon game, was justified.  Sometimes, even great hitters like Chamberlain (30 homers for Oklahoma) couldn’t hit sand if they fell off a camel.  Eleven players out performed Chamberlain at the plate; she led the team in strikeouts.

Judging from Spy email, the decision which most confounded the arm-chair experts was starting Creger against Japan in the first matchup, especially after she got hammered in the afternoon game that same day against Puerto Rico.  On Tulsa’s schedule, Creger did not face great hitting teams other than Oklahoma, Texas and LSU all losses by Tulsa  – Tulsa played 7 games against Top 25 teams, losing four.

Not dissing Creger as much as USA Softball.  It is widely known that several top players declined invitations to try out for USA.  Why?  Is the goal of the program to showcase the best amateur talent, or to win international championships?

Not least, when Lauren Gibson homered in the final game, she should have heard a thunderous roar from the stands along right field when she rounded 1st, and an equally loud roar when she rounded 3rd for the home stretch.  Those empty stands say that the effort by ISF and ASA to demonstrate huge support for a marquee tournament fell flat.  The USA players deserved stronger support.

Everyone in softbal hopes Team USA is more successful at the Canadian Open this week.
