Keilani Ricketts vs Danielle Lawrie
Two outstanding pitchers, both collegiate player of the year – Ricketts at Oklahoma, Lawrie at Washington.

Game scoreless until bottom 3rd. USA failed to take advantage of two Canada errors.

 

Bottom 3rd:  Holcombe singled. Orgeron singled.  S M Johson singled, both runners scored.

 

Top 4th: Yee singled.  Lawrick reaches on fielder’s choice.  Rafter singles, Salling singles, Lawrick scores.  Timpf drives in Salling.  2-2.  Bottom 4th: Chidester out 5-3; Fischer doubles.  Holcombe walks.  Orgeron singles, bases loaded.  Fischer scores on Moultrie single.  Holcombe scores on S Johnson putout. 4-2.

 

Top 5th: Yee grounds to 2nd.  Matthews doubles.  Lye singles, runners at the corners.  Yee strikes out.  Lawrick hits back to Ricketts. Bottom 5th: Cochran flies out to right.  Arioto strikes out.  Chidester singles. Fischer hit by pitch.  Holcombe strikes out.

 

Top 6th:  Chelsea Thomas relieves Ricketts, who had given up 6 hits and 2 runs.  Rafter advances on error by S Johnson at 3rd.  Salling strikes out.  Timpf hits into fielder’s choice.  Lever grounds to 2nd.  Bottom 6th:  Orgeron strikes out.  Moultrie grounds to short.  S Johnson strikes out (5 for Lawrie).  USA 4-2.

 

Top 7th:  Jackie Traina now pitching for the USA.  Gilbert flied out to 3rd. Top of the order.  Matthews flied out to center.  Lye strikes out to end the game

 

The USA on Saturday will play the winner of tonight’ late game between Japan and China. Late score: Japan 1-0. The winner of that game advances to Sunday’s championship game.  Canada will play Netherlands in an elimination game.  Australia will play the loser of the Japan-China game (China).  The winners of the last two games will meet later Saturday in an elimination game.

Japan 1, China 0.  Yukiko Ueno pitched the winner for Japan.  Japan scored the only run in the bottom of the 5th.  Furuta Maki doubled. Iwabuchia sacrificed.  Suzuki flied out to short.  Okubo sacrificed; an error at 2nd enabled pinch runner Yukina to score.

 

The USA and Japan split at the Canadian Open, the USA winning in pool play, Japan taking the championship 9-6.  Saturday’s game will start at 8pm.
