USA 5, AUSTRALIA 2

Attendance has been noticeably down during Oklahoma’s 100+ heat wave, but Friday night brought out the week’s largest, and certainly most boisterous crowd to watch USA play Australia – which had lost earlier to Japan Friday.

Neither side posed a serious threat until top 4th when Australia ut 2 on,one out.  Clare Warwick led with a single; Slugger Stacey Porter struck out, but Jodie Bowering laid down a bunt, no play, for the Aussies third hit.  Chelsea Forkin grounded to 3rd, both runners advancing.  Belinda White struck out, Jordan Taylor’s fifth.

Bottom 4th: Rhea Taylor beat out a bunt, then stole 2nd.  Stacy May-Johnson singled hard to right center, Taylor scoring.  Kaitlin Cochran hit into a fielder’s choice, bunting to 3rd, May-Johnson out at 2nd.  Brittany Schutte launched a fly ball deep to left, which Cox could not catch, Cochran scoring. Valerie Arioto flied out to right.  Jenae Leles fanned.

Verity Long-Droppert led the Australian 5th with a single; each team now had 4 hits.  Cox up, the runner advanced on a passed ball.  Cox hit back to Taylor.  Runner on 3rd, top of the lineup; Leigh Godfrey, who became strikeout six.  Warwick singled in a run.  Porter worked a 3-2 count, struck out on a rise ball.

Kelly Grieve struck out to open the USA 5th.  Gibson lined out.  Moultrie singled to right.  With Taylor up, Moultrie was called for leaving early.

Top 6th: Bowering grounded to 1st.  Forkin singled to center, the sixth hit.  DeBlaes singled past short.  USA pulled Taylor who had 7 Ks but had given up 7 hits; Keilani Ricketts relieved.  Ricketts had been announced as the pitcher for Saturday against Japan.  Jodie Stevenson, pinch-hitting for Belinda White singled to left, Forkin scoring the tying run.  Long-Droppert, two on, one out, fanned for the second out.  Jade Wall, pinch-hitting for Michelle Cox, grounded to 2nd.

Bottom 6th:  Taylor grounded to 2nd.  May-Johnson reached on an error on Porter at 3rd.  Cochran, the USA cleanup hitter, grounded to 2nd.  Schutte drew a pass.  Arioto tripled past a diving left fielder, two runs scoring, USA 4-2.  Taylor Hoagland dropped a single into short left center, the seventh USA hit. Arioto scored. 5-2. Thunderous applause from the home folks.  Grieve at bat, Hoagland was out attempting to steal 3rd.

Top 7th:  Australia, which suffered a late-inning loss to Japan earlier today, was down to three outs.  Godfrey went down.  Warwick grounded out to Gibson at 2nd, who made the throw on her knees. Porter who struck out her last 2 times at bat worked a 3-2 count and walked.  Bowering grounded to 2nd but Gibson couldn’t make the force (hit).  Two on, two out, USA put Chelsea Thomas in the circle.  Forkin struck out, ending the game.

Ricketts, who won in relief, said afterwards she still expects to pitch against Japan at noon Saturday.  Justine Smethurst pitched one inningk but gave up the three go-ahaed runs and took the loss.

Post-game, USA coach Ken Eriksen said he th0ught Taylor could finish — when she’s motivated and that rise ball is working, she’s a great pitcher — but said he went to Ricketts who he thought matched up better with the hitters coming up.  Similarly, he wanted Thomas pitching to Forkin to get the last out.  Taylor said her rise ball was workign better tonight — she recalled hanging a itch to Porter in a previous game which Porter belted over the fence.  Ricketts alternated between a rise and curve.

Several players said the crowd support, the nest so far, was “awesome.”
