CANADA UPSETS USA 4-3
With the temperature on the field hitting 111 degrees, the USA suffered its first loss.
Canada was hitting away against Chelsea Thomas. Melanie Matthews opened the game with a ground-rule double. Victoria Hayward walked. Jenn Yee flied out to left. Kaleigh Rafter socked a 2-run double to center, both runners scoring easily. Kelsey Haberl singled but was forced by Joey Lye. Megan Timpf grounded to 2nd.
Bottom 1st: Rhea Tayloer lined to 2nd. Kelly Grieve grounded to short. Stacy May-Johnson struck out.
Top 2nd: Thomas hitting 66 mph. Meagan Baird flied out. Hannah Schwarz grounded out. Top of the order: Matthews doubled to right., her fifth double of the Cup, a new Cup record (4). Hayward looked at a third strike.
Bottom 2nd: Leading off, Kaitlin Cochran homered. Valerie Arioto, Megan Langenfeld and Jessica Shults went down.
Top 3rd: Jenn Yee flied out. Kaleigh Rafter jacked a solo shot to left center, 3-1. Haberl looked at a third strike. Lye singled past 3rd. Timpf grounded to 2nd.
Bottom 3rd: Taylor Hoagland grounded to short. Lauren Gibson looked at a third strike. Taylor rapped back to the pitcher Caira.
Top 4th: Whitney Canion pitching for the USA. Baird walked. Schwarz reached when the throw to 2nd from Hoagland at 3rd was wide. Two on, Matthews out 4-3, the runners advancing. One out, Hayward grounded to 2nd, 4-3, Baird scored. The throw to 3rd was off, and Schwarz was out easily on the throw from 3rd. 4-1 Canada.
Bottom 4th: Grieve out. May-Johnson lined to short. Cochran singled to right, the second USA hit. Arioto, 3-2 count, singled deep to right, Cochran scoring from 1st. Megan Langenfeld, who won a Gold nationals and WCWS on this field, worked a 3-2, then looked at a third strike.
Top 5th: Canada down in order.
Bottom 5th: Cater pitching for Canada. Moultrie, pinch-hitting for Shults, flied to 2nd. Hoagland singled to right. Christi Orgeron, pinch-hitting for Gibson, struck out looking. Taylor at bat, Hoagland stole 2nd. Taylor lined out to Timpf at 3rd.
Top 6th: Brittany Schutte now catching for USA; Gibson back at 2nd. Lye swung at a third strike. Timpf walked. Baird struck out. Pinch-hitter Jill Russell flied to left.
Bottom 6th: Grieve watched a third strike. May-Johnson drew a 3-1 pass. Cochran was hbp. With tying run on base, Arioto, with one rbi in her bag, struck out. Schutte joined the list of four USA batters who looked at a third strike.
Top 7th: Leading off, Matthews flied out to short, good over the shoulder catch by May-Johnson. Hayward lined to Canion. Yee, always a tough out, singled to right, the sixth hit for the Canadians. Rafter struck out.
Bottom 7th: Moultrie dropped a single into left which a diving Matthews gloved but couldn’t control, the fifth USA hit. Moultrie advanced on a passed ball. Hoagland walked. Cates was relieved by Caira, the starting pitcher. Gibson struck out ona changeup. Taylor struck out, on a low pitch. Pinch-hitter Keilani Ricketts, a strong part of the Sooner arsenal, singled to right, on the first pitch, scoring Moultrie. May-Johnson, with runners at the corners, 4-3 game, grounded back to Caira, now the winning pitcher.

USA 8, JAPAN 4
The much-changed USA lineup against Japan shows the continuing search for more production at bat. USA batters in the loss to Canada looked at third strikes five times – and numerous other strikes in the counts, 11 strikeouts total, with only six hits.
A win tonight could be crucial for the USA, which is now 2-1, Canada 3-1. Japan is 2-0 and would be undisputed leader at 3-0. Australia is 2-2, Great Britain 1-3, and Czech Republic 0-3.
The game pits Keilani Ricketts for the USA against Makiko Fujiwara.
A large crowd braved the sweltering heat. Would history repeat? USA lost to Canada in a the 2010 Cup, went on to defeat Japan in the championship, 5-1.
Michelle Moultrie opened the game with a double to left. Rhea Taylor sacrificed her to 3rd. Stacy May-Johnson laid down an rbi sac bunt, Moultrie scoring. Kaitlin Cochran tripled deep to right but was stranded when Brittany Schutte grounded to 1st.
Bottom 1st: Eri Yamada walked, advanced when Nagayoshi hit back to Ricketts, 1-3. Furuta was out at 1st but Yamada scored on a passed ball. Yamamoto lined out.
Top 2nd: ValerieArioto was out 4-3. Taylor Hoagland singled, to center, stole 2nd on a bad throw by the catcher. Ashley Holcomb lined to Suzuki at 2nd who doubled Hoagland.
Bottom 2nd: Hayashi flied deep to center, error on Taylor. Suzuki hit back to Ricketts, 1-3, one of the better defensive pitchers, Hayashi to 3rd. Mine also hit back to Ricketts, but Hayashi scored, 2-1. Iwabuchi struck out.
Top 3rd: Lauren Gibson walked. Top of the order, Moultrie hit into a force at short. Taylor singled. May-Johnson flied deep to left center. Cochran, two on, two out, worked a 3-1, walked, loading the bases. Schutte at 2-2 lined to 1st
Bottom 3rd: Kageyama got the first Japan hit, but was forced by Yamada, who a pitch later stole 2nd. Nagayoshi walked. With Ricketts hitting 70 mph, Furuta struck out on a rise ball. Yamamoto popped up to 1st.
Top 4th: Arioto popped to 2nd. Hoagland lined to short. Holcomb singled to left. Gibson forced Holcomb at 2nd.
Bottom 4th: Hayashi flied out to Gibson at 2nd. Suzuki flied out to right. Mine popped up to 2nd.
Top 5th: Moultrie hbp. Taylor forced Moultrie at 2nd. May-Johnson up, Taylor stole 2nd. MJ walked. Cochran worked a 3-1 count, singled in the tying run. Mike Someya in to pitch for Japan. Schutte looked at a third strike, the first K. Arioto tagged a ground rule double on the first pitch, driving in two runs, 3-2 USA. Runners on 2nd and 3rd, Hoagland walked, loading the bases, the fourth USA walk. Holcomb grounded to 3rd. The USA had outhit Japan 7-1, but now had a one-run lead.
Bottom 5th: Chelsea Thomas relieved Ricketts. Iwabuchi struck out. Kageyama hit back to Thomas, 1-3. Top of the order, Yamada walked on four pitches. Nagayoshi grounded to 3rd.
Top 6th: Gibson singled to right, but was forced at 2nd by Moultrie. Taylor singled down the left field line. MJ popped to 2nd. Cochran, runners at the corners, walked on four pitches, loading the bases. Schutte was hbp, forcing in a run, USA 4-2. Arioto jacked a grand slam, the 10th USA hit, 8-2. Hoagland singled to center. Japan changed pitchers again, Fujiwara returning to the circle. Holcomb at bat, Hoagland was out, left early.
Bottom 6th: Japan still had but one hit. Furuta ground out to 1st. Yamamoto walked. Hayashi reached when her grounder was bobbled by Hoagland at 3rd, error. Suzuki struck out. Watanabe pinch hit for Mine, the catcher on the 2008 Olympic Gold medal team; the runners advanced on a passed ball; Watanabe singled to center, driving in 2 runs, 8-4. Jordan Taylor relieved Thomas. Onashi struck out.
Top 7th: Grieve, pin h hitting for Holcombe, grounded to short. Gibson hit back to the pitcher, 1-3. Moultrie walked, stole 2nd. Taylor ground out to the pitcher.
Bottom 7th: Japan now faced its first loss in the 2011 Cup. Japan had scored 4 runs on just 2 hits. Mizoe, batting ninth, struck out, the sixth K. Yamada struck out. Nagayoshi struck out, Taylor had struck out the side, ending the game.
USA improves to 3-1, in a tie with Canada. Japan is 2-1.
