7-3-2012 Canadian Fastpitch Open Tuesday

Hard rain overnight, but skies cleared at noon, and grounds crews have been drying out fields since dawn.  However, afternoon games will start an hour behind schedule.

Only in the IT age.  Some 400 players and parents are staying at the legenday Pacific Inn.  When word went out that morning games had been postponed, they all turned on their laptops and Ipads etc simultaneously, and  OVERLOADED THE HOTEL’S WIFI system.

Women’s International Games start Wednesday.  The Canadians advise that not only Danielle Lawrie but Jenn Salling and Caitlin Lever will play for Canada at Whitehorse.

Amanda Horowitz (Boston College)pitched a 2-hit shout, the second A’s shutout in as many games.

The A’s scored five runs in the 1st; 2 in the 2nd; and3 top 5th. Melissa Davin (Tennessee) drove in Ashley Carter and Kelsey Arnold with the first 2 runs.Vicki GalAsso doubled, Kylee Lahners and Jena Rubio had rbi hits.   In the 2nd, Mandy Ogle doubled, Davin homered.  In the penultimate at-bat, Mayan Tovar doubled, Courtney Gano tripled, rbi, she scored on a fielder’s choice by Kristrn Hooper. Davin walked and scored.

The next Elite games features California A’s against St Lois Extreme Elite.

The A’s broke the scoring ice in the 2nd.  Kylee Lahners lined hard to center.  Nikki Hollett singled to center.  After a sacrifice by Vicki Galasso, Jena Rubio doubled in a run.  Ashley Carter singled, rbi.

Through 2 innings, Erin Jones-Wesley (Long Beach State) had the Elite hitless.

Mandy Ogle and Melisssa Davin, who doubled in the 1st, flied deep to left in the3rd; Courtney Gano flied to right.  In the bottom, Elite down in order, Erin earning her second K.    Top 4th, Lahners singled to center.  Hollett singled down left field line, the speedy Lahners scoring from1st, and Hollett beating a rundown between 2nd and 3rd.  Galasso  walked. Rubio, two on, no outs, sacrificed the runners advanced.  Carter reached on a throwing error, two runs scored.  Kelsey Arnold singled to left.  Ogle struck out.  Davin singled, rbi.  Arnold also scored on a defensive lapse.  Gano grounded to short.  The A’s now led 7-0 on nine hits.

Taylor Maggio registered the first hit off Jones-Wesley, bottom 4th.  Maggio stole 2nd and 3rd. Three outs, including a strike out, ended the rally.

Jacqueline Flood now pitching for Elite.  Lahners, who ignited the 5-run outburst the previous at-bat, worked a 3-2 count, walked.  Hollett singled to left.  Galasso also went to 3-2, walkd, loading the bases, no outs.  Rubio drove in 2 runs with a single.  Carter ground out, but a 10th run scored, putt5ing the A’s into run-rule territory. Arnold singled, rbi., the 12th A’s hit. Ogle hit into a fielder’s choice.  Davin fanned.

Trailing 11-0, the Elite faced a mercy decision.  Amber Toenes fanned, Erin’s fourth.  Megan McNamee went down swinging. Lauren Marlinghaus flied to Rubio in right.

Erin had a 1-hitter with 4 Ks.  The A’s have yet to surrender a run

At 8:15, there are still two games to be played – Team Peru vs Team Mexico, and, White Rock Renegades vs Team BC. But Spy won’t stay to see them.  Only a very sparse crowd remains – it’s colder than a well-diggers ass in the Klondike.

Sidebar:  Canadians arestill chortling over the announcer at the US World Cup, who referred to the Canada Cup in “Vancouver Ontario” and to the world championship in “Yukon Saskatchewan.”  Learned geography from the ESPN ladies.
