8-22-2013 Akron Advances in NPF to Face Pride

The 2013 NPF national championship is being played in the excellent 1800-seat stadium built by the Chicago Bandits.

Thursday’s game between the 3rd place Akron Racers and 4th place NY/NJ Comets will determine which team goes forward into Friday’s medal round.  The winner Thursday will play the Pride on Friday.

Top 1st:  Lisa Norris pitching for Racers.  Quiocho walked; Lindley looked at a third strike; Mejia hit into a fielder’s choice, error at short.  Shaw singled to center, rbi, the runners advancing on an awry throw. Kamekona fanned.  Liddle also looked at a third strike. 1-0.
Bottom 1st: Olivia Galati pitching. Schlopy grounded to short, Montalvo singled, Morgan forced Montalvo, Castillo flied to left.
Top 2nd: McKinney hbp, Hooks hit into 1-6-3 double play, Garcia walked, Quiocho out.
Bottom 2nd:  Marder walked; Garcia popped to the infield; Del Ponte fielder’s choice, forcing Marder; Paculba singled sharply to center; Karino, one of four Japanese players in NPF, hits a grounder to 2nd, forcing Paculba.
Top 3rd: Lindley grounded deep to short, out on sharp throw by Del Ponte. Mejia reached on error; Shaw reached on fielder’s choice; Kamekana lined into a 9-9-3 double play..
Bottom 3rd: Schlopy led with a single; Montalvo sacrificed,  Morgan singled hard to 3rd; Castillo popped to center; Marder slugged a drive high to left caught on a highlight play by Quiocho.
Top 4th: Liddle struck out,  McKinney singled ; Cipolloni pinch-hit, ground out; Garcia walked; Quiocho popped to 2nd.
Bottom 4th: J Garcia led with a single up the middle; Del Ponte fanned; Paculba flied to short; Karino singled to left, the Racers sixth hit’ Schlopy got the crowd up with a long foul just outside the pole; fanned.  The Comets had held a 1-0 lead since the first batter, Quiocho, in the top 1st.
Top 5th: Lindley singled off reliever Rachel Fico.  Mejia reached on an error. Shaw walked; Lindley out stealing 3rd; Kamekona lined to right, double play at 1st.
Bottom 5th: Montalvo reached on a throwing error at 3rd; Morgan grounded softly to short; Castillo singled to left, off Mejia’s glove; two on at the corners;  Marder jacked a 3-run homer.  Garcia singled through the hole; Del Ponte singled; Paculba fouled out to left; Karino singled, rbi, 4-1. Angel Bunner relieved Galati.  Schlopy, two on, two out, grounded back to Bunner.
Top 6th: Liddle flied high to right; McKinney also flied high to right; Cipolloni fanned.
Bottom 6th: Montalvo singled to left, just beyond the reach of Quiocho; Morgan hit to 3rd, fielders choice, retiring Montalvo; Castillo fouled out to right; Marder walked; J Garcia flied to center.
Top 7th: The Comets were now three outs from elimination. Samie Garcia out 3-4.  Quiocho slugged a high homer to left.  4-2. Lindley out 4-3.  Mejia walked.  Shaw with the power to extend the game grounded to 3rd, spectacular play by Montalvo.  Akron wins 4-2.   Comets eliminated.

The Racers will play the Pride at 430pm Friday.  The winner will play top-seed Bandits tomorrow night.
