PAN AM QUALIFIER
USA Junior Women Advance to Championship Game with 9-2 Win
Juncos, Puerto Rico - The Jr. Women's National team (9-0) secured a spot in the
Gold medal game of the 2006 II Jr. Women's Pan American Championships tomorrow
at 4:30 CT with a semifinal 9-2 win over Venezuela. For the first time of the
tournament, the team allowed runs but would rally back to run-rule Venezuela in
six innings.
The U.S. faced a different Venezuela team this time, held hitless in game one,
as they had two hits in the first inning. Donna Kerr (San Diego, Calif.) started
in the circle and allowed lead off batter Mayles Rodriguez on base with a hit by
pitch. She was followed by a single by Hernanza Ruiz. Rodriguez did what no one
has down against this U.S. squad, put up a run. She and Ruiz scored when Andrea
Escobar singled to center field, advancing to third on an error by centerfield.
This would be the only runs scored in 45 innings played.
The U.S. responded loading up the bases in the top of the fourth off a single by
Brittany Lastrapes (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and walks issued to Monica Harrison
(Garden Grove, Calif.) and Maggie Viefhaus (Pacific, Mo.). However the defense
was just as strong as their offense, leaving three U.S. runners stranded on
base.
The U.S. overcame the 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the second with six hits to
take a 4-2 lead. The first run by the U.S. came when Ashley Hansen (Chandler,
Ariz.) scored after reaching with a single. Hansen would advance to second on a
single by Katie Schroeder (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and would go for third. In an
attempted run down by Venezuela, the shortstop overthrew third and Hansen
crossed home plate. An RBI single by K'Lee Arredondo (Tempe, Ariz.) plated
Schroeder to even the score at 2-2. Back-to-back triples by Harrison and
Viefhaus put up the two runs needed to take a 4-2 lead.
With bases loaded and two outs against her in the third, Lastrapes hit a single,
beating out the second baseman at first for two RBI. Harrison cleared the bases
with a double to center field, edging the U.S. lead to 8-2. Alissa Haber
(Newark, Calif.) scored the final run of the game scoring on a wild pitch in the
sixth.
Kerr allowed no more runs after the first inning, earning her third win of
the tournament and first complete game. She gave up four hits, no earned runs
and struck out 13.
Puerto Rico (6-3), which defeated Canada 5-3, and Venezuela (7-2) will play
tomorrow at 2:00 CT to determine who takes on the undefeated U.S.A. tomorrow at
4:30 CT for the Championship game.
