JOHN “ACE” DROHAN

Funeral services will be held Friday at St Joseph Church, Brookfield, for John “Ace” Drohan, father of Northwestern coaches Kate and Caryl Drohan.  Mr. Drohan passed away at his home in Brookfield on Monday.  He had been in ill health; some months ago he underwent a kidney transplant, provided by Kate.  Mr. Drohan was an ardent fan of his twins from their playing days at Providence through their coaching careers – which have led to a Big Ten championship and World Series berths.

A mass of burial will be celebrated at St Joseph Church, Brookfield on Friday at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to THE ACE FOUNDATION. Donations will be made to Danbury Hospital in gratitude and honor of Dr. Weinshel. Mail donations to Main Effort Financial, 770 Washington St., Suite 6, Holliston, MA 01746.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONES’  AND HOTSHOTS

Hello all-
This is Sarah Jones, Rick Jones daughter, as many of you know my dad was admitted into the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. He is stable and doing well just gave us a bit of a scare. He is on some medication that is causing him to have to stay in the hospital for at least 5 days and of course he is going crazy sitting in that bed and having to miss this tournament:) We are expecting him to have a full recovery and be up and at em again soon that is if one of the nurses does not strangle him first:).

So this email is to inform you that as of Tuesday, myself and my sister Kim are going to be running the tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Schedule and everything else still remains the same, but I wanted to give you a few updates:

*        There will be concessions open at both fields, both days

*        As he could not print off the rosters from the hospital, please bring a hard copy of your rosters to the tournament.

*        Please pick up your game balls before your first game, we will hand out all 5 games balls before your first game and you will be responsible to take those to     your games.

Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding as we look forward to another great tournament this year.

For questions regarding the tournament or any problems you can either contact me at this email up until 11am tomorrow or call me @ (480)650-6084 or Kim @ (480)262-9561. One of us will be at each of the fields all day saturday and sunday.

We look forward to seeing you all Saturday morning!

    Sarah Jones

Canadian Softball Team improves record to 3-1

(Beijing, China) – Canada’s Senior Women’s Softball Team continued its strong play at the China Cup after holding on for a 3-2 victory over Chinese Taipei early this morning. After Canada scored three runs early in the game, Chinese Taipei fought back for two runs in the sixth but that was as close as they would get.

Canada opened the scoring with a two out rally in the bottom of the second inning. Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) led off with a walk, and moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to first. Caitlin Lever (Amherst, New York) then delivered a two-out RBI single, stole second base and later scored on a passed ball. After Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) walked and advanced to second, Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) hit an RBI single up the middle to bring Matthews to the plate, pushing the lead to 3-0.

After three quick innings, Chinese Taipei finally got on the board in the top of the sixth. After Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) struck out the two first batters, the following hitter reached on an error, followed by a pair of hits and a hit batter, scoring the first Chinese run. Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK) then came on to pitch and walked the next batter to score another run before striking out the final Chinese hitter, cutting the damage to 3-2. She then retired the side in the seventh to earn the save.

Lawrie scattered eight hits over five and two thirds innings of work, allowing only one earned run while striking out seven. Meier struck out two batters in an inning and a third of relief.

Caitlin Lever led Canada at the plate, going three-for-three with a run batted in and a run scored, while Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) also contributed with two hits. Erin McLean and Tamra Howren (White Rock, BC) each connected for singles, rounding out the hits for the red and white.

Canada (3-1) will play its next game against unbeaten Australia (4-0) tonight (9:30pm EDT) before taking on China early tomorrow morning (5:00am EDT) to conclude the preliminary round.

Softball Shuts Out Northern, 23-0
Amber Flores leads the offense with six RBI

NORMAN, Okla. – Using 22 hits to score 23 runs, the Oklahoma softball team added another fall win Thursday night as it topped Northern Oklahoma College, 23-0, at the OU Softball Complex.  The 12-inning contest was split in half with a break in between the sixth and seventh frames.

Defensively, the pitching staff was solid as it recorded the shutout.  Senior Jadyn Smith threw the first six innings for the Sooners as she held Northern scoreless while only giving up one hit and striking out three.  Morgan Hudsonpillar pitched innings seven through nine and only surrendered one hit while striking out four.  Lefty D.J. Mathis finished off the game as she struck out seven in the final three innings and allowed only  two hits.

The Sooner offense was steady as Amber Flores led the offense with six RBI on a 4-for-8 performance.  The sophomore tallied two doubles and a home run.  Susan Ogden was also stellar with her four RBI, which included a three-run homer.  Every Sooner that saw at least two at bats recorded a hit in the 12-inning contest.

SPY NOTE:  Oklahoma’s softball and football teams are perennial offensive powerhouses – and in recent years that power has faltered at the finish line.  What does fate have in store for the Sooners?

THE JOKE IS ON ME

Doctor humor is a bit twisted and the doctors at Johns Hopkins had a good laugh at my expense Thursday when I showed up for my first injection of Byetta, a wonder drug based on saliva from gila monsters.  As I stared at this tube and needle, the diagnostician could no longer suppress her laughter.  “It’s not really the saliva – it’s a synthetic molecule that replicates the active molecule in the lizard’s saliva – but you and other patients bought into it.”  Funny!  Not funny: makes you nauseous.  Ever have that wrung out feeling Johnny Cash sang about in “Sunday morning sidewalks”?  Welcome to Byetta.  The tradeoff: stopped taking two drugs which were no longer working but I am now up to three injections a day.  But, after leaving the diabetes clinic, I had to go to Oncology.  You have a bad day?  Walk through that reception area and see all those cancer victims, some of whom are a phone call from the undertaker, and you realize you’re still on the bright side of the road.
