#13 Houston 1  UAB 0 (5 inn) WP-Angel Shamblin (27-2)1-H 10 K LP-Jennifer Nelson  (13-12)

The University of Houston softball team completed the sweep of UAB this weekend with a 8-0 win over the Blazers Sunday at George Ward Park in Birmingham, Ala. Three home runs highlighted the Cougar offense that registered six hits. Senior Angel Shamblin added 10 strikeouts for her seventh double-digit strikeout game this year.

Shamblin also gave up just one hit and walking one. She is 27-2 on the year and has a 0.57 ERA.

UH notched back-to-back four run innings in the fourth and fifth.

All four runs in the fourth inning came with two outs. Junior Katie Bush hit a leadoff single to begin the inning and junior Laurie Wagner was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Both scored on the next at bat as a result of two UAB errors from the first baseman while senior Amanda Grote advanced to second. Junior Haley Valis would score Grote with a two run home run to left field in the next at bat. The home run gives her 10 for the year and she is now the fourth Cougar to reach double-digit home runs this season.

Freshman Jennifer Klinkert and junior Christa Raley hit two more Cougar home runs in the fifth inning. Raley hit a leadoff home run to left field, her fourth this year.

Klinkert added a three-run shot to left field, scoring juniors Jessica Valis, and Katie Bush. Klinkert's homer was her 13th this season, giving her the second most on the team and it ranks third most home runs in the Houston single-season record books.

No. 9 Houston moves to 44-7 overall and 18-2 in Conference USA. They are 18-6 in the all-time series against the Blazers.

#14 North Carolina 2  #18 Virginia Tech 1 WP-Danielle Spaulding  LP-Kenzie Roark

#14 North Carolina 2 #18 Virginia Tech 0

The 14th-ranked North Carolina softball team wrapped up the ACC regular season title with a series win over No. 18 Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park. The Tar Heels held on for a 2-1 win in a game that was started Saturday, but had to be finished Sunday because of rain, and then blanked the Hokies 2-0 to end the series. Tech won the first game of the series, 5-2 in 10 innings on Saturday.

UNC (49-9-1, 18-2 ACC) led 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning when play resumed Sunday. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Misty Hall led off with a walk and then Beth Walker was hit by a pitch. Jessica Everhart flew out to right field before Whitney Davis broke up the no-hitter with an RBI single to left-center field to make it 2-1. But then, Walker was caught napping and was picked off at second base and Caroline Stolle was called out on strikes to end the game.

Kenzie Roark (L, 2-5) took the loss, going 1.1 innings. She allowed a run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts. Angela Tincher, who came into the game in the first inning, was relieved for the seventh inning by Roark. She pitched 5.2 innings, allowing a run on two hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Tech had just the one hit from Davis.

Tincher, who threw over 200 pitches and 15.2 innings on Saturday, got the start in the final game and show some fatigue early on. Breanna Brown led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly and then Tincher gave up an RBI single to Alyssa Francona in the second inning.

The Hokies showed no ability to hit any of the three pitchers UNC tossed at them as they picked up just two hits in the game, one from Jenna Rhodes and one from Charisse Mariconda. After pounding out 10 hits in the opener, the Tech bats mustered just three hits in the final two games.

Tincher (L, 29-6) suffered her first ACC loss of the season, finishing the year 16-1 in conference play. She went the distance, allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. She now sits with 1,987 career strikeouts and needs just 13 more to reach 2,000 for her career.

That chance will come Tuesday as the Hokies (40-14, 16-5 ACC) host a scrappy East Carolina (32-25) team at Tech Softball Park. It will be the final home appearance of the season for the Hokies and the first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 o'clock.

With the loss, the Hokies are locked into the No. 2 seed at next month's ACC Softball Championship at College Park, Md. UNC will be the No. 1 seed with Florida State third, Georgia Tech fourth and NC State fifth. Seeds six through eight, including Tech's first-round seventh-seeded opponent will be decided by next weekend's Maryland-Boston College series at Chestnut Hill. The Hokies will open the ACC Tournament on Thursday, May 8 at 12:30 p.m., against Maryland, Boston College or Virginia.

#15 Long Beach State 8  UC-Riverside 0 (5 inn) WP-Brooke Turner  LP-Stephanie Marshall

The UC Riverside softball team (18-32, 4-11) lost the series finale to No. 17 Long Beach State University Sunday afternoon, 8-0. Just one day after dropping two close one-run decisions to the 49ers, the Highlanders fell behind early giving up three runs in the first and three in the third while LBSU's Brooke Turner pitched a no-hitter through three. UCR third baseman Kristie Martinez broke up the no-hit bid in the fourth with a two-out double.

#19 LSU 4  Arkansas 0 WP-Cody Trahan LP-Kim Jones

Two home runs by Rachel Mitchell and a complete-game shutout by Cody Trahan led No. 15 LSU to the series sweep of Arkansas, 4-0, on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Tiger Park.

The more than 1,000 fans watched the Tigers earn the win despite a 30 minute rain delay. LSU improved to 38-14 on the season and 15-10 in Southeastern Conference play. The loss dropped the Lady Razorbacks to 33-25 overall and 6-19 in league play. The contest marked the final regular season game in Tiger Park, which was sent off with fireworks in both the sixth inning and at the conclusion of the game.

“It’s funny how fortunes can change,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. “You think you might not get to play any games, much less all three, and then we get the sweep. We had some great pitching performances from Cody, some of our bats are coming around and we made some great defensive plays. The crowd was great and we had a terrific senior day with awesome fireworks telling the park goodbye.”

For the weekend, Trahan earned all three wins, including a pair of complete-game shutout victories and a win in relief. The sophomore allowed only three hits on the day and seven on the weekend as opponents hit .146 against her. On Sunday, she walked only the leadoff batter of the game and struck out five.

“Cody stepped up huge for us,” said Girouard. “She probably still made some mistakes, but she made far less. She had her change-up really working, which I think set up her whole game.”

Mitchell tied the LSU single-game record with a pair of home runs, accounting for three of the Tigers’ four runs in the game. For the weekend, the sophomore went 6-for-7 with a triple, two home runs, four RBIs and five runs scored. She was also walked three times for an on base percentage of .900 and a slugging percentage of 2.000.

#22 California 3   #21 Washington 1  WP-Valerie Arioto (7-3) LP-Aleah Macon (15-11) S Melissa Drewery.  Cal’s two pitchers limited the Huskies to 2 hits.  In the top of the 1st, Fleischman walked and scored on Blake’s two-out single.
