TOP 25 GAME CAPSULES
#17 Louisiana-Lafayette
3 North Texas 2
WP-Donna Bourgeois (12-2)
LP-Kayla Lawson (9-8)
S-Ashley Brignac (2)
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns softball team extended their season-long winning streak to 16 games as they completed a three-game Sun Belt Conference sweep of North Texas with a 3-2 victory at Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin’ Cajuns Softball Park. Louisiana (37-10, 15-2 SBC) improves to 20-0 on the season at home. The Cajuns have now won 23 consecutive games at Lamson Park.
The Cajuns allowed just two runs in the game, both in the sixth inning. The pair of runs ended a 30-inning streak of shutout ball by UL. The Ragin’ Cajuns collected seven hits on the afternoon with sophomore Vallie Gaspard (Maurice, La.) and freshman Gabriele Bridges (Lafitte, La.) pacing UL with two hits apiece. Gaspard added a pair of runs, while Bridges also scored a run.
Lana Bowers (Crosby, Texas) drove in two of the Cajuns’ three runs. Bowers had RBI on a ground out and a sacrifice fly. Starting pitcher Donna Bourgeois (Lafayette, La.) earned the win, while Ashley Brignac (River Ridge, La.) picked up her second save of the year. Bourgeois worked 6.0 innings allowing two unearned runs on four hits. She struck out five batters while walking just one. Brignac entered the game in the seventh fanning two batters in her lone inning.
The Cajuns struck first in the opening frame. A leadoff walk by Gaspard coupled with a hard hit single to short by Holly Tankersley (Kirbyville, Texas) gave Louisiana a pair of baserunners. A ground ball moved the runners into scoring position. Bowers hit a deep fly ball to left field to plate Gaspard and give UL a 1-0 lead. For Bowers, the sacrifice fly was her third of the season and second of the series with North Texas. Bridges led off the second inning with a single to right centerfield. With one out, Katie Smith (Ruston, La.) bunted the runner over to second base. Gaspard followed with a single and an error by the Mean Green moved her to second base. Bridges came around to score on the play to give the Cajuns a 2-0 advantage. The Cajuns added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Gaspard singled to short and advanced to second on an intentional walk by Tankersley. A fly ball advanced Gaspard to third and Bower’s RBI groundout plated what would prove to be the winning run.
The Mean Green plated two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Back-to-back one-out singles gave North Texas a pair of baserunners. A fielder’s choice left NT with runners on the corners. A stolen base attempt caught the lead runner in a potential rundown, but an errant throw home allowed the runner to score. With a runner on second and two outs, the Mean Green plated a second run with a single through the left side of the infield that was mishandled by the Cajuns’ outfield. Leading 3-2, Brignac entered the game in the seventh inning and slammed the door shut on North Texas’ chances. Brignac induced a pop up back to the circle and fanned the next two batters for a perfect inning en route to her second save of the season.
#33 BYU 7 #20 San Diego State 4
WP-Christina Gwyn-Trice (14-6) LP-Christina Ross (23-11)
BYU nailed Ross for 5 runs in the first two innings, starting with Delhoussaye’s score on Snow’s sac fly in the 1st, and four more in the 2nd. Purcell led the at-bat with a solo HR; Vance slugged a 3-4 run homer to cap the inning. SDSU finally got on the board with Marquez’ 2-run double in the top of the 4th, but BYU immediately answered with a run on Willing’s home run to left center. That scenario repeated in the 6th: Beasley drove in 2 runs with a single for SDSU, BYU responded with a run by Purcell on Delahoussaye’s sac fly.
#20 San Diego State 4 BYU 0
WP-Christina Ross (24-11) 5-Hitter 10 K's LP-Paige Affleck (9-2) 8 K's
Very different game. Christina Ross becomes SDSU all-time and single season leader in strikeouts. Also, this win marked coach Van Wyk’s 400th career victory. In the 1st, Knudsen scored on Floro’s rbi sac bunt, then McCorkle scored on McDonald’s rbi. SDSU scored twice in the 2nd; Wisneski and Sidoti scored on an error at short.
OTHER GAME CAPSULES
#32 DePaul 5 UIC 0
WP-Becca Heteniak (21-6) No-Hitter 3-BB 10 K's LP-Carly Demarco (3-5)
DePaul All-American pitcher Becca Heteniak threw a no-hitter as the Blue Demons defeated UIC 5-0, Thursday at Cacciatore Stadium. DePaul has won its last five games and improves to 36-14 on the season, while the Flames fall to 18-28. Heteniak struck out 10 and walked three in her third career no-hitter. The sophomore threw her first career no-hitter against Villanova on May 5, 2007 and combined for a no-hitter with Tracie Adix during the NCAA Regional in 2007.
With Heteniak hitting her stride, Sandy Vojik provided the Blue Demons with some power as she smashed a pair of home runs in the contest. Vojik finished the day with a 3-for-4 effort and four RBI. Amber Patton and Jackie Tarulli-Fisher were also productive at the plate as the duo each registered two hits in the win. Vojik's first home run came in the first inning; a three-run shot that cleared the left centerfield fence. Up to bat for the second time, Vojik went opposite field for her ninth long ball of the season in the third frame. With a 4-0 lead, Patton and Vojik teamed-up to score DePaul’s final run of the ballgame in the fourth inning. With Patton on third and Vojik reached on a single, DePaul head coach Eugene Lenti called for the double steal and with perfect execution the runners stole both bases. Carly Demarco (3-5) took the loss for the Flames. In two innings of work, Demarco gave-up four runs on five hits. Whitney Orelanna closed out the game for UIC. Orelanna scattered a pair of hits, struck out two and walked two.
