(Whoever
posted Gametracker flubbed the dub, as they say; at one point, they had Elliott
winning, and teammate Burkhart losing.)
In the
bottom of the 1st, Vasquez singled and scored on Donnenwirth's double; Cowles
slugged a 2-run home run, 3-0. the Duck scored their run in the top of the
2nd on Fulava's home run. After Rogers and Cowles scored in the 3rd, Rice
relieved Rumfelt. ASU scored its final run in the 4th on Cowles sac
fly. ASU 51-3, 13-1 Pac 10. Oregon 29-21, 2-10.

#2 Florida
sweeps Auburn 3-1, 7-2
The No. 2
University of Florida Softball team (55-2, 23-1 SEC) added two more wins on the
season with a doubleheader sweep of Auburn (34-18, 10-13 SEC) Saturday afternoon
at Katie Seashole Pressly
Stadium. A crowd of 1,441 was on hand to watch the Gators win 3-1 and 7-2 and
honor senior Mary Ratliff (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) prior to the game. Sophomore
Francesca Enea (Woodland Hills, Calif.), junior Kim
Waleszonia (Fontana, Calif.) and freshman
Aja Paculba (Wildomar,
Calif.) led the Gator offense with 3-for-6 performances.
Enea tallied four RBI on the day to lead the team.
Waleszonia led the team with three runs scored.
Paculba scored only one run, but that run set a new individual record for
runs scored in a season. The Gators got on the board right away in the bottom of
the first of game one. Waleszonia
led off with a base hit to shallow center. Paculba
followed with a base hit down the right line, just over the head of the Auburn
first baseman. She moved to second on the play as the Tigers attempted to throw
Waleszonia out at first. With one out,
Enea drove a base hit up the middle to score
Waleszonia and Paculba
for the 2-0 Gator lead. Paculba’s run was her 50th
of the season, setting a new Florida record for runs in a season, besting the
previous record set by Jennifer Lutsi in 2000.
Auburn narrowed the Gator lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth.
Myesha Finney led off with an infield base hit.
Jorja Bell drew a one-out walk. Megan Mitchell
entered the game to pinch run for Bell. Finney scored on a Florida error on a
fielder’s choice play as the Gators attempted to throw Mitchell out at first. A
second fielder’s choice play put Kyndall White out
at second and left Auburn runners at first and third. Krista Clyde was hit by a
pitch to load the bases, but Starr Dorsey flew out to
Waleszonia in center to end the inning and the Tiger scoring threat.
Florida took its two-run lead back in its half of the fifth.
Waleszonia dropped a bunt single right in front of
the plate to lead off the inning. Paculba’s
sacrifice moved her to second. She came around to score on a double by junior
Ali Gardiner (Waccabuc, N.Y.) for the 3-1 Gator
lead. Angel Bunner replaced Lauren
Schmalz in the circle for Auburn and shut down the
final two Gator batters to end the inning. Junior Stacey Nelson (Los
Alamitos, Calif.) struck out eight Tiger batters,
while only giving up three hits to win her 34th game of the season,
tying her own school record, set last season. Schmalz
took the loss for Auburn to move to 6-2 on the year.
Auburn
plated the first run of game two as they scored on a hit, a walk and two Gator
errors in the top of the second. Katie Colton started the inning drawing a
one-out walk on a full count. She stole second and advanced to third on the
errant throw. Dorsey reached on a Gator error, allowing Colton to score for the
1-0 Tiger lead. A bunt single by Cassie Trosclair
put another Auburn runner on base, but the Gator defense took care of the next
two batters to end the half inning down by only a run. Florida used a seven-run,
10-batter second to take the lead. Senior Mary Ratliff (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) drew
a lead off walk. She scored on a double to right center by freshman Megan Bush
(Anaheim Hills, Calif.). Junior Kristina Hilberth
(Dunedin, Fla.) added an infield base hit. Sophomore Corrie
Brooks (Christmas, Fla.) brought Bush home with a base hit up the middle.
Waleszonia’s base hit up the middle brought
Hilberth home. Waleszonia
and Brooks moved to second and third on the play as the Tigers attempted to get
Hilberth at home. Brooks crossed the plate on a wild
pitch, to put Florida up 4-1. Paculba’s infield base
hit scored Waleszonia from third for a four-run
Gator lead. For the second tiem in the day, Brunner
came in as the Auburn reliever, this time relieving game two starter Brittany
Day. Gardiner knocked a base hit to left, but Paculba
was thrown out at third on the play for the second out of the inning.
Enea blasted her 13th home run of the season out in
left field plating the sixth and seventh Gator runs of the inning on the seventh
hit of the inning. Auburn added one run in the top of the seventh. With one
out, Trosclair singled to left. Finney followed with
a base hit to left center, moving Trosclair to third
and advancing to second on the throw. White’s ground out to short scored
Trosclair for the final run of the game, making the
score 7-2. Gator freshman Stephanie Brombacher
(Pembroke Pines, Fla.) struck out eight batters and scattered three hits through
the game to improve to 18-0 on the season. Day took the loss for Auburn to move
to 10-5.

WP-Donna Kerr
(14-2) LP-Missy Penna (30-8) S-Megan Langenfeld (5)
Behind a combined five-hit shutout by
freshman Donna Kerr and sophomore Megan Langenfeld, the fourth-ranked Bruins
picked up their 40th win of the season with a 1-0 victory over #7 Stanford on
Saturday at Smith Family Stadium. Freshman Samantha Camuso went 2-for-3, driving
in the game-winning run on a double in the fourth inning.

Michigan 11 Michigan State 3 (5 inn) WP-Jordan Taylor (23-2)
LP-Lesley Noel (13-16)
Michigan knocked out
three home runs amidst an explosive nine-run second inning en route to an 11-3
run-rule victory over intrastate rival Michigan State on Saturday (April 26) in
front of 727 fans at Old College Field. The Wolverines' victory in five innings
marked their fifth consecutive run-rule decision.
Michigan's
lineup combined for 10 hits -- its 13th double-digit hit effort of the season --
and three U-M players posted multi-hit performances as senior second baseman
Samantha Findlay (Lockport,
Ill./East HS), freshman first baseman
Dorian Shaw (Burke,
Va./Robinson SS) and junior
Teddi Ewing (Olathe,
Kan./East HS) registered a pair of hits apiece, including a home run each,
and combined for nine of Michigan's 10 RBI.
While freshman
pitcher Jordan Taylor (Valencia,
Calif./Valencia HS) did not have her strongest outing from the circle, she
did enough to claim her 23rd win of the season and become the winningest rookie
pitcher in U-M program history. Taylor fanned five Spartan batters and allowed
three runs on five hits and two walks.

Texas A&M
6, Nebraska 0 WP Megan Gibson LP Molly Hill
Aggie starting pitcher Megan Gibson tossed a
three-hit shutout and posted a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two
runs scored, a homerun and two RBIs as the fifth-ranked Texas A&M
softball team (44-7 15-1 Big 12) picked up its 15th conference
victory in a 6-0 routing of the Nebraska Cornhuskers (19-24, 1-11
Big 12) at Bowlin Stadium on Saturday. The shutout marked the
third-consecutive shutout for Gibson (28-1) and brought her
league-lead to 14 on the season. The senior posted a new career-best
for seven innings of work by fanning 13 batters and allowing just
two Husker hitters to reach scoring position.
The Aggies plated the winning run in the first
inning. With one out freshman Natalie Villarreal lined a single back
up the middle, marking the seventh time in 12 games that Villarreal
has reached safely in her first at-bat since moving to the two-hole.
Gibson walked for the 44th time this year and Jamie Hinshaw reached
on a fielding error by Heidi Foland at third base. With the bases
loaded Holly Ridley sharply hit a grounder to second base driving in
the first of two RBIs on the afternoon. Gibson help A&M post another
run in the third inning after reaching on a fielder’s choice.
Hinshaw crushed her first of two doubles on the day into the
left-centerfield gap to plate her 28th RBI. In Gibson’s third
trip to the plate, the Spring, Texas native lifted a 2-0 pitch high
over the left-centerfield fence that landed at the base of the flag
poles. The homerun marked Gibson’s 13th this season and 56th of her
Aggie career. The Big 12 career-leader in walks and homeruns, Gibson
now ranks fourth all time in RBIs (180) and is just 11 shy of taking
over the top spot. The two-run blast put the Aggies up 4-0.
Back-to-back hits by Hinshaw and Ridley followed Gibson’s longball
and A&M took a 5-0 lead into the late innings. Jami Lobpries started
the 6th inning off with a single and quickly swiped her second
stolen base of the day. Aggie shortstop Macie Morrow singled to
rightfield scoring Lobpries for her 22nd RBI on the year.
Nebraska’s Molly Hill (9-13) shouldered the loss
for the Huskers surrendering five runs on six hits in four innings
of work. Alex Hupp and Tori Tyson combined for three innings of
relief work giving up one more run on four hits.
#8 Arizona
7, Oregon State 6
The Beavers
attacked the Wildcats from the outset, and led 5-2 after two innings.
Miranda hit a two-out home run in the top of the 1st, and OSU added four runs in
the 2nd, including an rbi single by Paige Lowe which drove UofA starter Sarah
Akamine off the circle in favor of Lindsay Sisk. Arizona countered with
two runs in the bottom half; after Banister reached on an error, Chambers jacked
a 2-run home run. Arizona scored 4 runs in the 4th on three hits and two
errors, stranding three runners. After OSU loaded the bases in the top of
6th, Taryne Mowatt took the Arizona circle, and gave up a bases loaded walk to
Paige Lowe, tying the game. But Roth belted a two-out homer in the bottom
half for the winning margin.
#9 Oklahoma
Texas 0 (6) WP DJ Mathis. LP Meagan Denny
Led by three-run homers by Susan Ogden and Lindsey Vandever and a one-hit
shutout by OU pitcher D.J. Mathis, Oklahoma run ruled Texas, 8-0, in six
innings Saturday afternoon at the OU Softball Complex. Oklahoma played in
front of its largest home crowd of the season as 1,338 fans watched the
Sooners extend their win streak to five straight; the crowd was also the 10th
largest in OU Softball Complex history. The game was a milestone for the
Sooner program as well; the Sooners recorded their 15th straight
40-win season, including 14th straight under head coach Patty
Gasso. The Sooners improved to 40-11 on the season and 13-2 in Big 12
action while the Longhorns fell to 25-18 and 9-7 in conference play.“I
thought we really played championship softball today,” Gasso said. “Our
offense came out strong from the start and that is extremely important this
time of year.”
Mathis threw her 11th shutout of the season and improved to
25-5. The junior lefty was one walk and one hit away from a perfect game as
she also struck out eight in the contest. OU tallied 12 hits on eight
runs and scored six of their runs on two home runs. Vandever led the team
with a 3-for-4 outing, including her three-run homer in the second. Ogden
added a 2-for-4 performance with her three-run homer while Savannah Long
went 3-for-4. Amber Flores also set a career high with four walks in all
four of her at bats. The Sooners scored seven of their eight runs in the
first two frames before Jessica Legendre hit an RBI-single to left to end
the game in a run rule.

Mississippi State 2, Tennessee 1
Ali Bainbridge’s two-run walk-off single
with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning gave No. 23 Mississippi State a
2-1 upset victory over 10th-ranked Tennessee in the opening game of a
Southeastern Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the MSU Softball
Field. With the win, MSU (39-17, 12-12 SEC) secured a spot in the 2008
Southeastern Conference Tournament which will be played in Baton Rouge in two
weeks. Bainbridge’s game-winning base hit highlighted a 4-for-8 afternoon
for the Vestavia Hills, Ala., native in which she also scored twice in addition
to her pair of RBI.
Playing her final series in front of the home crowd, senior Hayle Guess hit her
sixth home run of the season, matching her career season high, as she capped a
3-for-4, two RBI day for the Bulldogs (39-17, 12-12 SEC). Trailing 1-0 after a
sixth-inning UT base hit in the day’s opening game, which was delayed for two
hours by heavy rains in the Starkville area, Lindsay Hunley reached on a
fielder’s choice that retired Brittany Bell. Nakita Boyce then beat out a bunt,
and Bramlett loaded the bases with a ground ball through the left side.
Bainbridge then hit a hard ground ball up the middle that deflected off UT
pitcher Ashton Ward’s glove and went into center field to score Hunley and Boyce
withthe deciding pair of runs. The walk-off single moved State starter Misty
Flesher to 19-7 on the year. Flesher picked up her sixth win in as many
decisions as she
allowed a run on five hits with three strikeouts. Ward took the loss.

Tennessee 8 #23 Mississippi State 6
A five-run third inning, a homer from
sophomore center fielder Erinn Webb and a perfect 5-for-5 effort at the
plate from senior shortstop Kenora Posey helped No. 10 Tennessee (45-10,
14-9 Southeastern Conference) rebound from a defeat in its opener to post a
hard-fought 8-6 victory over No. 23 Mississippi State (39-17, 12-12 SEC) in
the finale of a Saturday doubleheader at the MSU Softball Field in
Starkville, Miss.
Posey guided UT’s 14-hit offensive
assault with five consecutive singles from her lead-off spot and, for the
doubleheader, hit an impressive .667 (6-of-9) overall. Sophomore catcher
Tiffany Huff delivered two RBIs as part of a 1-for-4 performance at the dish
with a run scored. Webb’s solo homer marked her seventh of the season as
the Hemet, Calif., native went 2-for-4.
Freshman pitcher Ashton Ward fired 6.1
innings in relief of senior starter Megan Rhodes (0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, I K)
allowing four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to improve to
27-4 overall and 7-3 in the SEC on the season.

After an impressive comeback for a 3-2 win in eight innings in
game one of the doubleheader vs. No. 24 Hawai'i, the No. 10 Fresno State

Hawai'i would strike first in game one and take a 2-0 lead in the second off
back-to-back solo home runs by Clare Warwick and Valana Manuma.
Andrea Ortega would get the first hit of the game for the Bulldogs in the
bottom of the third, a leadoff double to left center field. With no outs and

Morgan Melloh would be replaced in the circle by fellow freshman Bulldog
pitcher
Ryane Petersen.
Ashley White would hit the Bulldogs second double of the day to leadoff the
bottom of the fifth.
Mallory Perkins would enter to pinch run and reach third on a single to left
field by
Andrea Ortega. Ortega would reach second on the throw. Petersen would clear
the bases with a two-RBI double down the right field line, her second of the
year to tie the game at 2-2.
Jenna Cervantez would hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth to
give the Bulldogs the 3-2 victory. It was the
second home run in as many days for Cervantez as she now has 12 on the season,
to tie her for ninth in a single-season. Petersen picked up her third win of the
year to improve to 3-0 in just her sixth appearance. She allowed just four hits
and no runs in five innings. She also leads the team with a .571 hitting
percentage. Melloh struck out four batters in three innings pitched and earned a
no decision.
Game Two
Rainbow Wahine starting pitcher Kate Robinson would drive in a run for a 1-0
lead. The Bulldogs would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth as
Nicole Angene and Melloh would hit back-to-back singles with two outs.
Perkins would hit in Angene from second with a single to left field.
Ashley White would hit a double with one out in the bottom of the eighth.
Mallory Perkins would pinch run and score from second to win the game, 2-1,
off a single by
Andrea Ortega. The Bulldogs had 11 hits, led by
Haley Perkins, Cervantez, Ortega and Angene with two each. Melloh improved
to 33-5 on the year as she had seven strikeouts. Her 33 wins ties her for third
in the single season record books at Fresno State. It would be the Bulldogs
seventh extra inning game of the season as they improve to 5-2 in those games.

Houston sweeps UAB
The University of Houston softball team
earned two wins over UAB Saturday in Birmingham, Ala.,
with scores of 4-0 and 8-3. With the wins the
ninth-ranked Cougars improve to 43-7 and 17-2 in
Conference USA. They now hold a 17-6 lead in the
all-time series against the Blazers.
UH won the first game, 4-0, behind a
two-run home run from junior
Laurie Wagner in the fourth inning. Senior pitcher
Angel Shamblin also moved to 26-2 in the circle this
season. She allowed two hits, no runs, no walks and nine
strikeouts. Junior
Jessica Valis started the game off reaching base on
an error by the left fielder and advancing on a wild
pitch. She scored on a sacrifice hit by junior
Katie Bush. Houston was held scoreless through the
next two innings until junior Wagner's two-run home run
to left field in the fourth inning. She plated freshman
Jennifer Klinkert who reached base on a double down
the left field line. The home run was Wagner's 16th this
season, one shy of the single season record of 17 set by
Kristen Glowacz in 2005. The Cougars put a final run
on the board in the sixth inning when freshman
Baillie Lott reached base on a walk. She would score
on the next at bat when
Jessica Valis hit a double past shortstop.
Game Two- Houston 8, UAB 3
The Cougars took the second game with a score of 8-3,
despite falling behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first
inning. Senior
Barbie Love pitched the complete game, allowing four
hits, three runs, three walks and nine strikeouts. She
improves to 10-2 in the circle. UAB took the early 2-0
lead after the Blazers' Kayla Harris hit a two-run home
run in the bottom of the first inning. Houston would
quickly regain the lead in their second at bat putting
up five runs in the second inning behind a double from
junior
Haley Valis. In the second, the Cougars batted
through the line-up, while forcing two UAB errors.
Wagner and senior
Amanda Grote hit back-to-back singles to leadoff the
third inning.
Haley Valis put them both on second and third with a
sacrifice bunt. Wagner would eventually score on a
fielding error by the UAB third baseman and Grote on a
single by junior Krista Raley. Raley would cap the
scoring in the inning when she crossed home after junior
Elaina Nordstrom walked with the bases loaded. That
would cap the scoring in the game for the Cougars as
they would hold on for the win. The Blazers scored one
more run in the second inning. Laura Callaway would
score for UAB after a leadoff double in the inning.

Beth Walker’s
walk-off 3-run homerun in the 10th won this much anticipated contest
for supremacy in the ACC – the Tar Heels coming into the three-game series with
a conference record of 16-1, the Hokies at 15-3 – UNC the hardest hitting ACC
team ad .302 vs the Hokie’s Angela Tincher who leads all of Division I in many
pitching categories. Stolle led off the bottom of the 3rd with a
walk, one of four given up by starter Lisa Norris in the first 3 innings. With
Stolle on 1st and one out, Erin Ota doubled deep to center and the
speedy Stolle scored. Tech added a run in the 5th; Charisse
Mariconda walked with two out, and scored on Kelsey Hoffman’s double. Entering
the top of the 6th, only one Tar Heel had reached base, denying
Tincher a perfect game, and she struck out the first two batters. But, 2nd
base Erin Ota bobbled what should have been the third out, putting Brown on 1st.
Brown stole 2nd and scored on Palmer’s double, the first UNC hit.
Spaulding drove in Palmer with the tying run with a single to center. 2-2.
Tincher struck out the side in the 7th, as she had in the 2nd.
(12 for the game at that point) Rhodes opened the Tech 7th with a
single. Ota lined out to 3rd but Mariconda singled to put the
winning run in scoring position. Then, reliever Amber Johnson came up big.
She fielded Kelsey Hoffman’s hard-hit grounder, and threw to 3rd for
the force. She then fielded Hall’s hard grounder for the out at 1st,
to end the Tech threat. Into the 8th, Francona ground out to 2nd.
McKinney became Tincher’s 13th. Brown looked at a 3rd
strike. Now, Tech needed a run to secure a game which should have been a seven
inning shutout. Everhart ground out to short, but Walker singled sharply to
left. Davis, who had a single and walk, looked at a third strike. Stolle lofted
a high fly to left for an easy catch by Allen, who had made three very good
catches for all the outs in the 4th. Mariconda slashed a line drive
toward left, caught on the run on a good play by shortstop Sam Ingersoll. The
first two batters in the 10th whent down but Francona hit a single
deep to short and went to 2nd on a throwing error by shortstop Hall.
The threat ended when pinch-hitter Robinson popped to Tincher. Tech, which had
stranded 10 runners, opened the 10th with a grounder to short,
misplayed by Ingersoll for an error. Hall singled to center, two on, no out.
Ingersoll flied out to center. Beth Walker settled the issue with a 3-run home
run to deep center field. Tincher had 16 Ks, giving up 4 hits. Amber Johnson
took the loss. Tech 40-12, 16-3 while UNC is 47-9-1, 16-2. Tincher began the
game with 487 Ks for the year, 1,957 for her career. There was a 48-minute
delay during the game after officials spotted lightning.
#18 Virginia Tech vs #14
North Carolina
The question all
season about Tech is can they win when Angela Tincher doesn’t pitch. Sometimes
yes, but often no. In today’s second game, Kenzie Roark (2-4) lasted four
batters. Brown and Palmer led off with consecutive singles (Palmer rbi).
Spaulding struck out but Jacobs singled and that was enough for Coach Scott
Thomas to bring Tincher in off the bench. Tincher had thrown 138 pitches in the
first game. Tincher put out that fire but she was touched for a run in the 3rd;
Brown singled again and scored on a single to deep center by Spaulding. Through
five innings, Spaulding had a no-hitter. In the 4th, the Hokies
loaded the bases on a hit batter and two walks but Everhart struck out. The
Tech hitting woes were obvious in the 5th when Davis, Stolle and
Rhodes all looked at third strikes. Somewhat mercifully, the game was suspended
in the 6th -- it was raining like a cow peeing on a flat rock -- and will
completed Sunday as will the scheduled third game. Tincher passed the
200-pitch mark.

Beach State sweeps UC Riverside
The
UC Riverside softball team (18-31, 4-10) traveled to 17th ranked Long Beach
State University Saturday afternoon, dropping two tightly contested one-run
decisions to the 49ers, 2-1 and 4-3.
Amanda Klimczak got the start in game one for the Highlanders drawing the
unenviable assignment of going against Long Beach State's Brooke Turner – she of
the 0.68 era and the 21-4 record. But Klimczak matched Turner pitch for pitch
throughout much of the game giving up just one run on three hits through six
innings. Turner also limited the Highlanders to three hits and one run – an RBI
single off
Cassie Greenawalt's bat that scored
Veronica "Roni" Yee.
Turner
continued to dominate the UC Riverside bats in the seventh retiring them in
order. Kilmczak came out for her seventh inning of work trying to send the game
into extra innings, but a single, and a walk put runners on first and second
with one out. Brooke LeSage's single scored Jessica Beaver with the winning run.
Christin Songer took to the circle in game two and found herself down 2-1
after the first inning before finding her groove retiring the 49ers in order in
the second and allowing a single baserunner in the third. In the meantime,
Marissa Alvidrez, whose last homer came on April 6, drilled a Bridgette
Pagano offering over the leftfield fence scoring Yee and giving the Highlanders
a 3-2 advantage. The homerun was Alvidrez' 10th of the season tying the school
record originally set by Melissa Sanchez in 2006.
Songer
couldn't hold on to the lead, however, as Lacy Tyler led off the bottom of the
fourth with a single and Pagano followed with a two-run homer to left. That
score held up into the seventh as the Highlanders mounted a final rally in the
top half of the inning. Alvidrez reached second with one out on a two-base error
by 49ers leftfielder Tyler, but Pagano struck out
Katie Curtis and Greenawalt to end the game.
#16 LSU
sweeps Arkansas
A walk-off three-run home run
by Shannon Stein in the bottom of the eighth inning gave No. 15 LSU the
doubleheader sweep of Arkansas, 4-0 and 8-6, on a rainy Saturday afternoon at
Tiger Park.
With the senior presentations coming a day early because of the threat of a rain
out on Sunday, Stein made the post-game event much more of a joyous occasion.
The senior came through with the game-winning hit on just her second home run of
the season and only her third homer in three years with the Tigers.
“It was kind of like a storybook day if you were ever going to script a Senior
Day,” said LSU head coach Yvette Girouard. “It was a tough one to lose if you’re
Arkansas, but we have been on the bad end of that a lot this year.”
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Arkansas hurler Katy Henry was
called for an illegal pitch that scored Rachel Mitchell from third to tie the
game up and sent it to extra innings.
“I didn’t see what their pitcher had done illegally, but (assistant coach)
Megan (Smith) saw it,” said Girouard. “She went from the rosin bag straight to
the ball and you have to wipe your hand off before you can do that. I saw the
call out of the corner of my eye and started jumping up and down.”
Jazz Jackson then put LSU in the position to get the walk-off win by saving a
grand slam in the top of the eighth. With two outs and the bases loaded for
Arkansas, Sandra Smith hit a ball to deep left field that Jackson went up and
over the wall to come down with for the third out to keep the Tigers within one
and set up the game-winning play.
“We had some magnificent plays,” said Girouard. “Jazz saved a grand slam in the
top of the inning. I was kind of fussing at Stein in her at-bat because I
thought it was a ball that she swung at to get to 3-2. I was fussing at Tayl’r
because I was fussing at Stein and then she hit the next pitch out.”
With the wins, LSU improved to 37-14 on the year and 14-10 in Southeastern
Conference play, assuring the Tigers of a place in the SEC Tournament in two
weeks at Tiger Park. The losses dropped the Lady Razorbacks to 33-24 overall and
6-18 in conference play, dropping Arkansas to 10th in the league standings with
four games left to play.
Cody Trahan earned the win in both games, recording a complete-game shutout win
in game one before coming on in relief to earn the win in game two. The
sophomore allowed only four hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts in her first
outing, before coming on with one out in the top of the eighth and getting the
final two outs in the win to improve to 14-4 on the season.
“Once Cody established some pitches, she kept them off balance and was able to
get some strikeouts, which is something we haven’t been doing,” said Girouard.
“She hasn’t had that many strikeouts in a while.”
Tiffany Garcia started game two and gave up five runs, only two of which were
earned, on five hits with two walks in four and a third. Casey Faile came on in
relief and allowed one run on a solo home run in the top of the eighth, while
giving up three hits and a walk and striking out three in three innings.
“It took the staff to win the second game,” said Girouard. “The seniors had a
great day and we got both of the games in and avoided the rainout.”
Mitchell continued her hot streak at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a triple, an
RBI and three runs scored. She was also walked twice for a .857 on base
percentage for the day. Roessner was 4-for-6 with a home run, an RBI and a run
scored, while Duhon was 2-for-5 with two walks, a double and a home run.

Louisiana-Lafayette sweeps Troy
Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajuns
softball team extended their season-long winning streak to 18 games as they
completed a doubleheader sweep of Troy on Saturday afternoon at the Trojan
Softball Complex.
The Cajuns collected 16 hits in
the two games en route to 4-2 and 4-0 victories.
Gabriele Bridges (Lafitte,
La.), Vallie Gaspard (Maurice, La.) and Katie Smith (Ruston, La.) each went .500
on the afternoon. Bridges and Gaspard both finished 3-for-6 with Bridges adding
a pair of doubles. Gaspard added a pair of walks to lead the team with a .625
on-base percentage on the day.
The Ragin’ Cajuns got wins from
Donna Bourgeois (Lafayette, La.) and Ashley Brignac (River Ridge, La.). Brignac
worked 6.0 innings of relief in game one to earn the victory, while Bourgeois
started the second game earning the win.
On the day, the pitching staff
combined for a 1.00 ERA. The duo fanned 19 total batters and combined for a
shutout in game two. The pitcher scattered 13 hits in 14 innings with only just
three extra base hits
#20 San Diego
State loses to Utah 2-1
The San Diego State softball team fell to Utah, 2-1, in eight
innings Saturday afternoon at Ute Field in Salt Lake City. With the loss,
the Aztecs (37-15) dropped into a tie for second place with the Utes (26-21)
at 9-5 in Mountain West Conference play. Brigham Young is a game up on each
team at 10-4. Meghan Crouse scored the game-winning run for Utah in the
bottom of eighth inning on a wild pitch with two strikes on batter Kara
Foster. Senior
Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) (24-12) was the tough luck loser
after allowing two runs (one earned) on just three hits and a walk over 7
2/3 innings. She also struck out six.
SDSU got on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning.
Senior
Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) hit a one-out single to center field,
stole second and moved to third on an illegal pitch. Junior
Erin Floros (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) then scored Wells on an
infield single with her team-leading 35th RBI of the season.
The Utes didn't get their first hit until the third inning
but it was a big one as Devina Quintero singled to right field to score
Diana Phillips, who had reached after being hit by a pitch.
San Diego State's
Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS) doubled to lead the
offense, while Wells, Floros, senior
Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) and freshman
Samantha Beasley (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS) each added
singles.
The Aztecs, who finished their nine-game road trip with a
7-2 record, will return to Montezuma Mesa Friday for a doubleheader against
Colorado State beginning at 5 p.m.
#21
Washington 6 #22 California 5
A change in the batting order is just what
Jace Williams needed. With only two hits in her previous 15 at-bats,
Williams dropped down in the order and went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs on
Saturday afternoon to lead No. 22 Washington past No. 21 California, 6-5, in a
Pac-10 Conference game at Levine-Fricke Field. Williams had not hit lower than
third in the order in the 37 games she had started, but hit sixth against Cal
after entering the game with only two hits over the past five games. After the
Golden Bears went up 2-0 in the third inning on a two-run home run by Taylor
Kelly, the Huskies responded by scoring three runs in the top of the fourth.
With one out,
Ashlyn Watson and
Morgan Stuart both reached after getting hit by pitches from Cal starter
Marissa Drewrey. Two batters later, Williams singled up the middle to plate
Watson. Pinch-hitter
Ashley Tuiasosopo drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases before
Amanda Fleischman hit a 3-2 pitch over the third base bag that brought home
Stuart and Williams to put the Huskies up 3-2. A UW error in the bottom half of
the inning led to three unearned runs and Cal went back in front, 5-3. All three
runs came with two outs. Again the Huskies answered right back with three more
runs to take a 6-5 lead.
Bailey Stenson led off with a walk and moved up to third on a single to left
centerfield by
Alicia Blake.
Ashlyn Watson followed with a double to left field to score Stenson. The
Huskies tied it up at 5-5 on an RBI-single by Williams, and took the lead when
Dru
Hester hit a hard shot that Cal third baseman Katie Vickers couldn't handle,
which allowed Watson to score from third in what proved to be the game-winning
run. The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Huskies and put their
record at 26-17-1 and 5-8 in Pac-10 play. Cal fell to 36-20, 4-10 in the
conference.
Aleah
Macon came on in relief of
Caitlin Noble and pitched the final four and two-thirds innings to pick up
the win and improve to 15-10. Macon scattered two hits while striking out eight
and walking five. In addition to Williams' two hits,
Amanda Fleischman was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Watson was 1-for-1 with two
runs scored and two walks. Hester, making just her sixth start, had a single in
the seventh inning for her first hit of the season. Drewrey (24-13) gave up
eight hits, five earned runs and four walks while striking out six in going the
distance. Vickers led Cal offensively with two of the team's five hits.

UMass sweeps
Saint Louis 14-0, 9-0
The UMass softball team
(33-11, 18-0 A-10) extended their winning streak to 23 games after shutting out
the Saint Louis Billikens (17-31-1, 7-9 A, 10) in Saturday's doubleheader. The
Minutewomen started game one on Friday evening, but was postponed until Saturday
afternoon due to lightning. After holding an 8-0 lead with two outs in the top
of the fourth inning, the Minutewomen resumed play on Saturday to shutout Saint
Louis 14-0 in five innings of play. In game two, the Minutewomen continued their
hitting dominance and shutout the Billikens 9-0 over five innings..
#25 Nevada

No Hitter
Jordan
McPherson and Richelle Villescas combined on a no-hitter as Nevada completed a
series sweep over Louisiana Tech with an 8-0 win in five innings. The no-hitter
is just the second in program history. McPherson had the first one – last season
against San Jose State (April 14, 2007). The Wolf Pack, ranked 18th, 20th and
25th in the three national polls, won its seventh game in a row and improved to
35-14 overall and 13-2 (first) in the Western Athletic Conference. Tech fell to
29-26 and 7-10. McPherson started and pitched four innings. She struck out four
and did not walk a batter. She faced just one batter over the minimum as an
error by the shortstop kept it from being a perfect game. Villescas entered in
the fifth inning and pitched a 1-2-3 frame to close out the game. Nevada got
the bulk of its offense in one inning and via the long ball as the Wolf Pack hit
two home runs and scored seven runs in the second inning. Sophomore Kelsey Starr
had a two-run blast, as did freshman Danielle Patrick. Freshman Britton Murdock
drove in a pair of runs while senior Vanessa Briones and freshman Noelle Micka
each went 2-for-3.
Nevada is now 9-0 at Hixson Park on the year and 19-4 at the park since it
opened last year.
