Phil Gutierrez Selected as Commissioner of So Cal ASA.
12/3/2007

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) announced today that Phil Gutierrez has been named Commissioner of Southern California ASA, effective immediately. Gutierrez becomes Commissioner after spending the past five years as the So Cal ASA Umpire-in-Chief.

Gutierrez has been associated with the ASA since 1975 when he registered as an umpire while stationed in Japan with the U.S. Marine Corps. He joined the So Cal ASA UIC staff in 1990 and in 1998 was appointed the So Cal ASA Assistant State UIC. Most recently Gutierrez was appointed to the Deputy National Supervisor of Umpires Staff in February 2006, where he supervised the Umpire program in the Western Territory.

Gutierrez has umpired ASA softball, both fast pitch and slow pitch, for over 32 years, played Men’s Fast Pitch prior to that while in the Marine Corps, and coached Women’s Fast Pitch. He has also umpired in four national championships, including the Men’s Major Fast Pitch and the Men’s Armed Forces Championship. He has been assigned as an AUIC or UIC at numerous State and Regional Championships, and more than 15 National Championships.

“It is a huge honor to be appointed the Commissioner for this very prominent association, and a great privilege to serve its membership,” said Gutierrez of his new appointment. “It's a challenge I look forward to, and I have full confidence that with the help and work of the outstanding staff Steve Monson has left in place Southern California ASA will continue its success in our very popular sport of ASA Softball.”

Other experience includes being an ASA umpire clinician at the state, regional and national levels, including National Umpire Schools and the Slow Pitch and the Fast Pitch Advanced Schools. Gutierrez is a member of the National Indicator Fraternity and the Gold level Medals Program and in 2005 received the Region 14 Award of Excellence. He was also recently inducted into the San Diego County Sports Hall of Champions (Hall of Fame) as a softball umpire, in October of 2006.

Umpires Named for 2008 Olympics
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) is pleased to announce that two of its ASA Umpires have been selected to umpire the Olympic Softball Competition at next year’s games in Beijing. The group consists of six males and six females representing eight different countries, with a pair of alternates from two more countries.

Lori Bish (Tacoma, Wash.) and Traci Stoelting (Avon, Ind.) were selected from the United States by the International Softball Federation to be a part of the 12 person staff to umpire the games. This will be the first time to work the Olympics as the ISF allows an umpire to work only one Olympic Softball Competition.

This however will be a return trip to Beijing for both Stoelting and Bish who both served as umpires at the 2006 World Championships. Other events on the resume of Stoelting include the 2007 European African qualifier, 2005 Pan American qualifier and 2003 United States World Cup in Hawaii. She has also umpired three ASA Women’s Majors, ASA 18-Under Gold and two ASA 12-Under National Championships.
