JERRY ORBACH
Jerry Orbach was New York to his core, and symbolized all that is good about the theatre. I was privileged to see him in “42nd Street” and “Chicago.” Also liked his work in “Dirty Dancing” which, the dancing aside, took honors with “Marjorie Morningstar” in capturing the essence of resort life in the Catskills – back during the day.
NEW YORK (Dec. 29) - Actor Jerry Orbach, who played a sardonic, seen-it-all cop on TV's "Law & Order" and scored on Broadway as a song-and-dance man, has died of prostate cancer at 69, a representative of the show said Wednesday. When his illness was diagnosed, he had begun production on NBC's upcoming spinoff "Law & Order: Trial By Jury," after 12 seasons playing Detective Lennie Briscoe in the original series. His return to the new show had been expected early next year. On Broadway, the Bronx-born Orbach starred in hit musicals including "Carnival," "Promises, Promises" (for which he won a Tony Award), "Chicago" and "42nd Street." Earlier, he was in the original cast of the off-off-Broadway hit "The Fantasticks," playing the narrator. The show went on to run for more than 40 years.
2005 TOURNAMENT CALENDAR
Spy WILL PUBLISH ITS ANNUAL LIST OF COLLEGE AND Gold/18A tournaments on January 1.
IN MEMORIAM
SPY will publish a list this weekend of all the notable people who passed away in 2004, headed by a list of softball people. To make sure we do not inadvertently leave out a name, take a moment over the next day or two and send reminders. Thank you.
Also, say a prayer for the 78,000 tsunami victims. Sadly, it may get worse as disease strikes the survivors. Beautiful part of the world which I was privileged to travel on several occasions. No nation or region is prepared to cope with such staggering loss of life – more than our casualties in Viet Nam – nor such devastation.
IT’S THE SEASON
In the weeks since nationals, travel ball teams have been practicing with players aging up – and also inveighing players from other teams to join their rosters. This practice is not limited to the softball world. Just read in the Wall Street Journal that a major Washington-based law firm just opened a new office in Beijing – and hit the ground running by “obtaining” all of the lawyers and their clients from another DC-based firm which had gone the long route of building a practice in China.
This is also the season for flight cancellations, lost baggage, etc. US Airways may go under; I have no sympathy for the employees who contributed to the morass by failing to show up for work but now US Airways is asking employees to volunteer time this weekend – without pay. After my last trip to the West Coast, I had already decided to stop flying US Airways – which functions as though it’s run by five-year olds.
My wish for Hollywood in the New Year: come up with fresh ideas. Ving Rhames as Kojak? No. Ving deserves a chance to create his own identity and he has the skill to do it, without borrowing from the late Telly Savalas. Kojak was built around Savalas’ persona as a street-smart but sophisticated Greek-American cop.
