GAME NOTES SATURDAY

Beach Girls 3, Hotshots Gold 1.  A sharply contested game between the much-improved Beach Girls and the host Hotshots, each starting their aces, Katie McNamara, one of the better unsigned ’05 pitchers, and Kim Reeder (committed to Ohio State).  In the late innings, Kailey Yarmer took the Hotshots mound and surrendered a two-run double to Stefani Poedubickey which proved the difference.

Delong Outlaws 1, Hotshots Neuman 0.  We were impressed by tall, rangy Rachelle Federico, an ’07 who just turned 17.  Rachelle scored the only run on an rbi by Megan Murray, and handled plays at 1st with skill.  But, we hear she wants to be a basketball player in college.

Firecrackers 5, Hotshots Gold 0.  The Firecrackers were very flat in their first game, losing to the Beach Girls 4-1, with Brittney Barger, who had been off for much of the early fall season, absorbing much of the damage.  But, they looked like a different team intheir second game.  Up 2-0, Kaitlin Cochran settled any doubts when she jacked a two-run homer off Kori Bowser.  Melissa Roth added an rbi single.  Megan Langenfeld was the pitcher of record for the Firecrackers.

Beach Girls 6, Select 0.  The BG’s rely on ace Katie McNamara, one of the better unsigned o5 pitchers, but they have other new weapons.  Deanna Minuto hurled a very capable win.  In this game, the BG’s scored 5 in the 5th.  Allison Rutherford and twin Darcy add speed on the bases, and Allison notched 3 rbi on two hits in this game.  Kristen Schindler pitched for the BG’s.

OC Lionettes 3, Fresno Force Gold 0.  Amanda Klimczak notched 8 Ks for the shutout.  Torrey Schroeder held her own with 5 Ks for the Force.  Yvetter HernNDEZ, Heather Hamilton, and Ashley Levine scored all their team’s runs in the 5th.

L’il Saints 8, Vipers 1.  Laine Roth, who is committed to Arizona, is a converted 1st baseman, but she put on a veritable clinic at 3rd – leaping high to snare line drives which could have been rbi hits, charging bunts, and whipping throws to 1st as though she had played the keystone for years.  Among other key hits, the Saints got a 2-run single from Lisa Conchos and a bases loaded rbi from Shlee, and a 2rbi hit from Roth to close out the scoring.    But Roth wasn’t finished.  The Saints decided to test newcomer Stephanie Draper who got struck out two in her first appearance in relief, but got tagged for a double in the last inning; the next batter smacked a hard line drive toward left which Roth leaped for and caught.  Roth was the most impressive defensive player we saw.

NM Sundancers 5, Pure Lightning 0.  Paul Kohman entered his one team into two pools – to give them more experience.  Antoinette Whiting rose to the occasion in this game, belting a 2-run homer.

NM Sundancers 2, Scorpio 1.  The Sundancers called frequently on Cassidy Nee who bested Danielle Nulliner in this contest.

Hotshots Gold 5, Select 1.  Stefanie Ewing had 2 rbi.  Kim Reeder pitched quite effectively.  The Select used Tami Weston and Katie Boffshever.  Kailey Yarmer closed for the Hotshots.

GAME NOTES SUNDAY

L’il Saints 4, Beach Girls 0.  Rebuilt after Stockton this team is one of Joe Botti’s best – if he can keep it together.  The BGs are making three West Coast trips and Plantation;  with no sponsors, Joe says it is difficult to hold a roster.  The Beach Girls had only one practice before this tournament, and despite their 3-0 Saturday record, their lack of time together showed in the first game Sunday when the Saints went to small ball and squeeze plays.  Twice, BG fielders hesitated, uncertain of what play to make, and it cost them.  Courtney Shlee singled to open the 2nd; she advanced on Lisa Conchos’ sac bunt which was misplayed, and scored on Kristen Kruickshan’s squeeze hit.  Two runners were on via errors in the 3rd; Oliva Bustamente’s rbi single made it 2-0.  Laine Roth was issued yet another deliberate pass – coaches paid attention to her performance on Saturday.  Shlee, who has committed to Oregon, drove in another run.  Meanwhile, Stephanie Draper  continued to smooth out her curve – literally.  Stephanie, pitching under the watchful eye of Crystal Draper – who wore a path between the back of the backstop and the dugout, throws the curve 63-64 mph and seems fully recovered from wrist surgery – but she was in trouble from time to time when the curve flattened or broke late.  This Oregonian has a lot of promise – and just turned 17.

Firecrackers 5, Lionettes 3.  This game, which featured sharp pitching and power hitting by the pitchers, started off as a sure thing for the Lionettes, who scored twice to start the game.  The Firecrackers got one back and tied the game on starting pitcher

Megan Langenfeld’s homer.   The Lionettes regained the lead in the bottom of the 6th, Jessica DeMatteo scoring on an rbi by pitcher Amanda Klimczak off reliever Brittney Barger for a 3-2 lead.  In the top of the 7th, Molly Bausher beat out an infield hit and Barger helped her cause with another infield hit.  With two out, Crhis Ramos lashed a two-run double. Langenfled singled to center to drive in the final run, a 5-3 lead, and Barger, who missed a lot of work this fall while on site visits, said her screw ball wasn’t working well and relied on an inside fast ball and drop to win the game.

Hotshots 2, Cal Vipers 1.  The only ITB game we know of (ITB only if within the time limit).  The Hotshots Gold won when Stefanie Ewing (committed to Oregon State) singled to advance the ITB runner, Analise Rubacalva, who scored on Kailey Yarmer’s rbi.  Dani Gonzales went the route.

Fresno Force Gold 4, Hotshots Gold 1.  Torrey Schroeder (06) who had several good outings this weekend, went the distance.  Kim Reeder started but was relieved after three.

Fresno Force  Gold 4, CA Select 1.  Sami Hall pitched the win.

Beach Girls 2 Lionettes 1.  Katie McNamara got the decision over Taylor Peyton.  Allison Hess hit a ground-rule double and scored on an rbi single (batter’s name does not appear on roster).

Firecrackers Gold 9, L’il Saints 1.  Both teams had played opponents close until the Firecrackers unleashed this barrage to run-rule the Lionettes in 5 innings.  Kristen Cruikshank was spotted a 1-run lead in the top of the 1st.  With one out, Andrea Ortega slammed a single off Brittney Bargar’s leg but was picked.  Laine Roth  walked and scooted to 3rd when her steal of 2nd was complemented by a failed throw-down.  Courtney Shlee’s rbi brought in the run – but the lead was short-lived.  Lead-off batter K’lee Arredondo walked in the bottom of the first and scored on rbi by Megan Langenfeld to tie.  In the 3rd, hard-hitting Katie Cochran (committedto ASU) singled; Molly Bausher beat out a fielder’s choice to break the tie.  Molly scored on Melissa Roth’s single.  Sara Akamine walked.  Jessica Marlowe and Arredondo singled.  Chris Ramos walked to load the bases; Langenfeld walked to force in a run, upping the score to 6-1.  After another run, DeAnn Young (committed to Oregon State) singled in the final two runs.  Akamine, who has been clocked in the 66-67 range, pitched the last two innings.
