JUNIOR WORLD CEREMONIES

With a brilliant sun shining over the Nanjing University of Technology stadium, an audience estimated at 5,000 people, overflowing to fill the hillside overlooking the field, was treated to a brilliantly-colored, extremely well choreographed display of dancers, singers, dancing bears and lions, and dragons in the opening ceremony which had been postponed by rain on Sunday.

Each of the 14 teams paraded past the packed stadium, carrying their national colors, and were joined by the umpires (two are from the USA – Judy Coles and Bernadette Murphy – followed by a ceremonial tossing of a pitch and speeches from dignitaries.

The hours of practice time which had to precede this ceremony were obvious in the precision in which each group performed.

The degree to which the organizing committee went to put on this lavish display bodes well for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing .
