SPY could not get details last night on Team Canada's loss to Russia.  The following report is provided by Softball Canada.

"Canada loses to Russia in game one of the Jr. World Championships"

(Ottawa, ON) - Canada fell to the Russians 1-0 today in their first game of the Jr. Women's World Softball Championships in Nanjing, China. Due to rain delays, the first day of the championships was postponed until today. In Canada's game, the Russian's pitching proved too much for Canada. Canada were kept off the bases with Russia throwing a 1 hitter resulting in no runs and striking out 12 Canadian batters. Canada also pitched a strong game with South Surrey, BC's Jesse Sigurdson allowing 1 run on 6 hits, walking 2 batters and striking out 10. Russia scored the only run of the game on a walk in the 8th inning using the international tie-breaking rule. Canada also performed defensively from 3rd base Erin McLean from Whitby, Ontario and when catcher Jessica Morris from Brampton, Ontario threw out Russia's only attempt to steal a base. Canada was unable to capitalize when Brampton, Ontario's Andrea Ground and Quebec's Noemie Marin advanced to base on 2 Russian errors. Canada's only hit came off the bat of Windsor, Ontario's Michelle Baggio as she pinched hit for Canadian Catcher Jessica Morris in the bottom of the 7th. Canada had 0 runs on 1 hit, and committed 2 errors while Russia scored 1 run on 6 hits and made 2 errors.
The losing Pitcher was Jesse Sigurdson pitched 7 innings, allowing 6 hits, 2 walks and striking out 10 Russian batters. Canadian Catcher was Jessica Morris. Danielle Lawrie pitched 1 inning allowing 0h, 0r, 0 walks.
Canada's next game is against the Netherlands on Tuesday October 14th at 5:30pm (China Time).
