Texas Sweeps Texas A&M Corpus Christi

The Texas Softball team registered 28 hits and 18 runs as it swept its season finale doubleheader with Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 10-2 and 8-0, Thursday night at McCombs Field. Longhorns’ freshman righthander Brittany Barnhill tossed her first career no-hitter in game two, fanning four Islanders in 6.0 innings of work. Texas claimed both games by virtue of the eight-run rule, finishing both games in 6.0 innings.The victories moved Texas to 27-20-2 as it heads into the Big 12 Tournament next weekend, while Texas A&M Corpus Christi fell to 21-29. Barnhill (7-10) tossed her sixth career complete game and third career shutout in the nightcap after senior starter Meagan Denny (19-8) recorded a complete game victory in game one. Denny surrendered two runs on four hits in 6.0 inning of work, striking out nine and walking three. Islanders’ game one starter Margo Hurdt (9-7) suffered the loss, surrendering 10 runs on 16 hits in 5.1 innings. Game two starter, Andrea Simancas (0-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up eight runs on 12 hits in 5.1 innings of work.

In game one Texas recorded a season-high 16 hits with sophomore shortstop Loryn Johnson leading the way with a 3-for-4 effort. Junior first baseman Desiree Williams and sophomore centerfielder Kori Cook added a pair of two-hit, two-RBI performances in the 10-2 win. Five Longhorns posted two-hit efforts in the nightcap, with Williams, Johnson, sophomore designated player Tallie Thrasher, Barnhill and Cook all recording a pair of hits.

LIU Finishes Conference with 17-1 record

Seniors Jessie DePippo (Westlake Village, Calif.) and Vanessa Mejia (Roanoke, Va.) drove in two runs apiece in their final home regular-season contest and sophomore Blaire Porter (Redmond, Wash.) hurled seven shutout innings in leading the Long Island University softball team (31-15) to a 4-0 victory over Rutgers at rainy LIU Field on Thursday. After finishing the regular season with a 17-1 Northeast Conference record, the Blackbirds will host the NEC Tournament on May 9-10 in downtown Brooklyn. Top-seeded Long Island will face No. 4 Wagner on Friday, May 9, at 10:00 a.m.
