TOP 25 GAME CAPSULES
#1 Arizona State 3 #21 Washington 0 WP-Katie Burkhart 12 K's LP-Aleah Macon
The win ties ASU’s all-time high in conference wins from 1991 and puts ASU at 53-2 overall and 15-1 in conference play while Washington falls to 26-19-1 overall and 5-10 in conference action. The win combined 12 strikeouts by Burkhart with eight Sun Devil hits. ASU loaded the bases in the 1st and scored when Rogers drew an rbi walk. The RBI set a new ASU team single-season record topping the old record of 370. Renee Welty followed suit with a seven-pitch at-bat to pull a walk and another run as ASU took the 2-0 lead after one. Crabb belted a solo shot in the 4th for the final score.
#4 UCLA 2, #10 Arizona 1 WP Anjelica Selden LP Taryne Mowatt
No. 4 UCLA Bruins pitcher Anjelica Selden (21-3) flirted with a no-hitter through five-plus, and a walk-off home run by Monica Harrison downed the No. 12 Arizona Wildcats, 2-1, in front of 575 here on Friday afternoon. In a highly-touted pitchers duel, Selden gave up two hits and Taryne Mowatt gave up four. Selden fanned six in the victory, while Mowatt whiffed three in the loss. Mowatt (19-12) hit Jen Schroeder to lead off the third for the Bruins. Pinch-runner Lauren Mirabal then moved into scoring position with a sac-bunt, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly to center to open the scoring. After another base hit, Mowatt induced a Megan Langenfeld popup to end the inning, 1-0. Arizona (31-16, 8-8 Pac-10) saw its first base runner when K’Lee Arredondo earned a walk in the top of the fourth, then Jenae Leles was plunked for the 12th time on the season to put two on with one out. But Stacie Chambers struck out and Laine Roth popped up to shallow left to end the scoring threat. Selden finally gave up a hit in the top of the sixth. Arredondo hit a two-out double to the wall to bring Leles to the plate once again. Selden recovered, though, and forced a groundout to end the inning. In the UA seventh, Stacie Chambers lined out on a hard shot to deep right, followed by a deep shot to left centerfield caught just off the warning track off the bat of Roth. In the last chance for the Cats, Sam Banister stepped up to the plate and smoked a 1-2 pitch off the scoreboard to tie the game. The sixth bomb of the season for the junior ignited the UA bench and Arizona faithful in attendance. Callista Balko walked to follow up, but Lauren Schutzler struck out to end the half with the game tied, 1-1. After the UA rally, Monica Harrison hit her first career home run to left field to end the game, 2-1.
UCLA (42-5, 13-2) is a perfect 8-0 at home in conference play, making them the only team in the Pac-10 to post an undefeated record in their friendly confines.
#8 Stanford 6 Oregon 0 WP Missy Penna 5H 10K LP Melissa Rice
Penna struck out three of the six batters she faced in the bottom of the 7th, but the Ducks loaded the bases with two walks and a single by Vitek, bringing up the ever-dangerous Bryant, who struck out to end the game. Rice held the Cardinal in check until the 5th when Howe and Neill singled with two out, and pinch runner Schroeder scored on an error. Smith singled and scored with two out in the 6th, then in the 7th, after Neill walked and Coon doubled, Smith stroked a 2-run double.

#22 Nevada 4 San Jose State 1 (9) WP-Katie Holverson (19-5) 10 K's LP-Deanna Mauer (12-14)
The Nevada softball team moved one step
closer towards its first-ever Western Athletic Conference regular season title
on Friday.
The Wolf Pack took a 4-1 victory in nine innings over San Jose State at SJSU
Field on Friday, cutting the team’s magic number to one game. Nevada improved to
38-14 overall and 14-3 in WAC play. San Jose State fell to 25-30 and 5-10 in the
WAC.
A number of notable events occurred in the game and with the Wolf Pack earning
the victory:
- Nevada tied the school record for wins in a season with 38 (2004 team went
38-28).
- Nevada broke school record for WAC wins in a season (2004 team won 13 games
when the WAC played a 24-schedule instead of the current 18-game league slate).
- Freshman catcher Noelle Micka went 2-for-5 and broke the school’s
single-season record for hits. She now has 70 hits on the year. She passed
Jiliane Hartfiel, who has 69 in 2004.
- Nevada tied the school record for longest win streak at 10 straight games.
- Freshman Britton Murdock broke the school record for walks in a season with
29. She passed Cindy Elkins, who drew 28 free passes in 2006.
- Junior Brittany Puzey extended her hitting streak to 10 straight games. It is
the third longest streak on the team this season.
Nevada struck first with a single run in the first inning as Puzey doubled and
scored on Sam Bias’ single. But the Spartans tied it in the second inning and
the teams then played scoreless ball until the ninth.
Nevada took a 2-1 lead when Sam Bias scored on a ground ball by Kym Silagyi.
Later in the inning, Micka singled scoring Tyler Schafer. Kristin Stith also
scored on the play on an error by the right-fielder.
Nevada started Katie Holverson went the distance, scattering seven hits and
yielding just one run. She did not walk a batter and she struck out 10 as she
improved to 19-5 on the year and 8-0 in WAC games.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday to close out the regular season.
Nevada needs one more victory – or a Fresno State loss – to clinch the WAC title
and the No. 1 seed in next week’s WAC Tournament.
NOTES: Nevada streak of at least one home run in nine streak games came to an
end ... Micka now has 23 multiple-hit games, which leads the WAC ... Holverson
fanned 10 in the game, one off her career-best of 11.
#25 California 9 Oregon State 1 (5) WP Marissa Drewery.
Bernice Masaniai and Sanoe Kekahuna belted home runs to help the 22nd-ranked California Golden Bears to a 9-1 road win over the Oregon State Beavers in five innings on Friday evening. Cal not only improved to 39-20, 6-10 in Pac-10, but also took the season series from the Beavers, winning two of the three games. The Golden Bear offense notched seven hits, while ace sophomore pitcher Marissa Drewrey locked down the Beavers, scattering six hits and striking out five for her 26th win of the season. She has allowed just eight hits, two runs and two walks over her last 15 innings pitched.
Masaniai's home run brought her RBI total to 40 this season, giving Cal three players with 40 or more RBI - Kekahuna (45), Leomiti (41) and Masaniai (40). Valerie Arioto, who scored a run in Friday's contest, also drew a walk, bringing her season total to 40, two shy of tying Kaleo Eldridge's walk total of 42 in 2005 - fifth-most in a single-season. After Cal's seven-run burst in the second inning, the Bears have outscored their opponents, 55-10 in the second inning of games this season. Additionally, Cal is 28-4 when leading after two innings this season.
The Bears clawed their way to a 2-0 lead in the top of the
first inning thanks to a Leomiti two-run double through the right side which
plated both Arioto and
Erika Racklin. After Oregon State scored a run in the bottom of the
first, Cal put up seven runs in the second inning to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
After
Vernae Sevilla punched a single up the middle, Kekahuna drilled her eighth
home run of the year on a 3-1 count. Later in the inning with Racklin and
Shannon Houston on base, Masaniai planted her sixth home run of the season
over the left field wall on the very first pitch she saw.
Julie
Meyer also scored in the inning on a wild pitch.
