NATIONAL PRO FASTPITCH

The National Pro Fastpitch softball league took a major step forward in preparation for the 2004 season with the drafting of 80 players Saturday night, after the completion of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association annual meeting in Montgomery , Texas .

 

Sixty-nine players had previously committed to the eight rosters, which are still not up to full strength.  At least 105 players are expected to try-out for these coaches on Sunday; as many as 150 players may show up.  Spokesmen for NPF cautioned that some of the committed players had not yet signed agreements; the lists SPY has may not be final.

 

NPF will issue a press release when the tryouts are completed, which SPY will publish as soon as received.  SPY wishes the pro league every possible success.

 

The draft Saturday night consisted of four rounds for Elite players and six rounds for selecting college seniors who will be eligible in 2004.  SPY’s understanding is that, while the draft is not absolutely binding, no other team can negotiate with a drafted player unless that player is released.

 

The drafting order for Elite Players was: San Antonio , Texas , Sacramento , Arizona , Denver , New York / New Jersey , New England and Akron .  The draft order was reversed for selection of college players.
